Interesting; according to the usual source I consult, that is either RICOH (Japan, as you suggest) or TYG02 (Taiyo Yuden). If true, I stand corrected: it'd be an excellent choice of brand. The user-submitted portion of those media codes are a mixed bag though --- look here.

It looks like the DVD5 is TY and the DVD9 is RICOH. I know a few years back RICOH was a good brand, made in Japan. But still, all of the reviews of the RICOH do not look good. I saw that forum, it looks like anybody with a dvd burner can post there.

It's still an excellent source to obtain mediacode information. If I'm really interested, I look into configurations and burners used and then make a judgment call. You're right in that at least historically, RICOH/JPN had previously been considered perhaps the silver standard (after Tys and Verbs).

Been using them over a year and they still play fine

See reply #11 (the intervening posts since our last exchange all deal with the discs you mentioned).

DVD+R DL Verbatims, ive made 60+ burns with no coasters yet! they cost alil more but you save on discs in the long run, i get a pack of 25 for around £20, my burnner is a pionner and my pc is an advent firefly..... (yes i know its a very cool name for a pc i LOVE the show "FireFly" to but that wasnt the reason i picked that model!) its one of them slim mini towers i guess thats where they got the name from

Be aware, while what you say is perfectly true the burner certainly enters that equation. For example, this ASUS SATA burner I have will error out on Verbs --- the burner sucks. If I use the same discs from the same lot on my Lite On --- zero issues. Something to keep in mind as all burners are not created equal.
