Well it's not that a drive needs megawatts to power on

I know what you meant by megawatts, but it does need a small fraction of a megawatt. Would be nice to know if the WODE has enough power in the USB connection. If it is fully USB compliant it will have. But who knows for sure with a 'specialty' item like this.

There should be more than enough power from the USB outlet to run the drive without problem.

    Quite excited about this.
From what I saw in the "Installation video", WODE takes all its power from WII box. Therefore your queston should be: Can WII provide enough power to my USB drive via WODE?

If I were you, I would power the HDD separately, as any power fluctuation may corrupt data on HDD. (I know it's not handy)

What I would also do (and i will once I get my WODE) I will look into a way to share that HDD over LAN so I can "see" it from my PC over the network. I read some sites where it says WODE(Linux) can have the USB HDD configured as SAMBA share.

The ultimate config would be to make WODE read network drives over LAN so no local USB HDD will be necessary.... Now I'm dreaming...

    Hope this helps.

Good point, I think you are right, the WODE plugs directly into the Wii via USB. However, the Wii has 2 USB 2.0 ports which both can power an external USB powered HDD. So if you want to get picky, perhaps the correct question is actually: "If the WODE gets its power from the Wii USB ports, does the WODE have enough power left to supply through it's own USB, enough power to power a USB powered HDD."

Power fluctuation? From a USB 2.0 compliant port? Not on the Wii. Maybe on other less main stream products.

    Very cool idea.

So we still don't have an answer, just a few guesses. We will find out when the units arrive at our doorsteps I guess.
