Who knows, but the thought of NO FAT CHICKS makes me want the WODE even more.

Ah, I see what you did there.
FAT is an acronym for File Allocation Table, an older filesystem from the DOS days and earlier. The first version is FAT12, but it's so ancient that it doesn't really matter much. Apparently it only seperated the data into two sectors, one for the control structures and one for the actual data stored on the disk. A corruption of even part of either sector rendered the disk unusable. FAT16 came along later and went through MANY revisions over the years, with the VFAT format being the final version (source). FAT16, of course, has a major drawback - it can't handle partitions larger than 4GB (source). NOTE: That source is more than a little outdated (it's part of the "Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit"), but the information more or less still applies. FAT32 came along later and expanded those boundaries, but it still has its limits - 137GB maximum partition size, and files cannot be larger than 4GB (source It's the last one, I promise!).

Microsoft later came up with the NTFS, which added support for file permissions to prevent any user from messing with just any file, as well as support for larger drives and larger files. However, unlike FAT32 NTFS is all Microsoft code, so no other operating system could read it for the longest time. This made FAT32 the perfect filesystem for removable media, as pretty much every filesystem in existence can read FAT32 drives. In addition, portable devices that push the limits of FAT32 using current technology are prohibitively expensive to make, although the day may come when something new may need to be used for them, perhaps some kind of FAT64? Or maybe take a page out of the linux books and use ext3, jfs, or some deriviative thereof? Failing that, the ntfs-3g driver for linux has been stable for quite some time now, and it -might- have a Mac version since both Linux and OS X are based on Unix; I don't know as my only experience with a Mac was some simple user-level stuff. I doubt my friend would've been too pleased if I asked her to let me play with her laptop when she was trying to show me a simple comic she'd made on it! =P I don't know offhand if most external harddrives use FAT32 or NTFS; I've had ample storage on my internal harddrives and my PC's portable enough that prior to looking into Wii hacking I've never had much interest in the devices.

Back to the topic at hand, though, this WODE thing looks pretty cool! I've done a preliminary googling of WDF and it looks like a promising way to compress Wii ISOs down to WBFS-or-lower filesizes and it doesn't take much time to extract. That's based on only the first page of a multi-page topic on another forum and that looked to be theoretical work, so I'll have to research this more later to see just how it works.

The price tag is a little hefty so I'm going to hold off on pre-ordering one of these right now, but if it lives up to the hype then I may just have to pick one up in a few months.

I don't really like the vertical stand, but i hope they will have a horizontal version soon. also will it be possible to control WODE via a custom made channel that would open up a "usb loader" style menu will all the games you have legally backed up?

Apparently any internet browser including the Wiis Opera browser will be able to configure it but this is only based on what I've read and could possibly never come to exist.

but having to use a tiny control stick and small lcd screen to navigate to the .iso to load is impractical for some people. i do not see it being an issue for some one to code a channel that will see the drive emulator and then open up a list of available games. but actually configuring the WODE devices options via a the wii web browser would be great.
