So what you're saying is that it's possible to accidentally update with an out of region disc even if the setting in the wiikey2 menu is set to your correct region?

No. Im saying if you dont "block updates" and aren't using starfall,

People will get a wrong game and it will ask for an update, and they will do it.

    It always happens......

Doesn't the Wiikey2 menu have an option to only allow own region updates?

    Isn't it the default option?

Doesn't that stop the foreign game from installing its foreign update?

yes it is the default option, when installing a wiikey v2 simply do this:

    install modchip
    turn on
put a backup or original of your own region into the console
    play game

this will automaticly do the following
set your wiikey v2 to "PAL"
set your wiikey v2 update blocker to only accept PAL discs

replace the word PAL with the region of your console

modchips run at a very stealth and low hardware level, i highly doubt that future updates will be able to disable the modchip from working

softmods you have to update on as far as i know every new nintendo update, which can be a hassle for people who just want to play games

Thanks for clearing it up. This is exactly the way I've always understood it.

It just gets confusing, when a lot of people imply, that you have to block all updates in order to avoid getting the ones from wrong regions...

nooo...you're supposed to block all updates because while updates from your region won't hurt your wii, it will affect its homebrew with future updates. 3.2 is the best system menu.

however if you only want to play games with your wii (no homebrew) i guess its ok with default settings.

but somewhere down the line you may find that you need homebrew - either to install some updates that an out of region disc needs to play or to boot an out of region game since modchips aren't 100% regionfree.

i suggest you install starfall and stay on 3.2 because if you brick your wii...

In my opinion you need to decide if you want homebrew or not. It is a pain to install all of the IOS manually if you are not even going to use it. If you don't really care about homebrew then just set your wiikey to allow updates from your own region (not block all).

It really isn't that hard to run the twighlight hack and downgrade if he wants to go down that road in the future. I personally think it is a huge waste of time to install starfall/homebrew/IOS and block all updates if he has no use for homebrew.

3.3 and above patches the trucha bug so you cant use fake singed disks anymore...also on 3.4 they update automatically and some future update could render your modchip useless. unlikely, but who knows?
Just like Crazysheep said, if we do update, doesn't it defeat the purpose of downgrading back to 3.2 to be able to play fake-signed games? And if your games are BrickBlocked, then it wouldn't ask you to update to begin with.

i always tell my customers to leave it at stock, it will block other region updates but allow their region updates to happen. Now if you care about homebrew then go ahead and block all but if you don't and just want a hassle free way to play backups then the aforementioned is the best way to keep things.

Actually it may become VERY hard if new system menu updates are implemented. All I'm saying is that homebrew is the safer way to go with more options and features available...

You do have a point though - if you really couldn't care less about homebrew, never used fake-signed disks and decided that bricking your wii was something extremely unlikely, then blocking all updates would be pretty much pointless.
