Hi all,
I have been out of the game for a long time so not sure on a few things.
I have a Japanese Wii that was bought in Dec 2006, it is fitted with a Wiikey 1. I haven't updated the Wii for at least 2 years (it's been in the cupboard for ages).
Can I update this via the system menu to the latest firmware (4.3) or will this affect the Wiikey and playing backups?
Can anyone give me any general tips?

Hey,
do yourself a favour and don't update, 4.3 is a pain and has no benefit for the user, was only designed to prevent homebrewing and modding etc.
this may sound blunt but to make things easier for you,
you might want to switch to softmodding and usb loading.
no disc burning, and no worries with updates (you would have to use scrubbing software everytime when you get a newer game to remove the update partition so the wii doesn't get updated etc etc)
check out wiiflow on youtube for example.
you'll never get nice coverflow loaders with a hardmod.
plug in your usb harddrive, have every single game in one loader, just so nice;)
also allows you to play movie dvds, stream music to your wii, play .avi from hdd or shared network folder etc.
still have my old wiikey in my console but my drive didn't see a disc for a long time.
no disc mess, burning, getting mad on bad burns, no scratched discs etc.
do the softmod any wii guide (linked below). takes about 2hrs to get a long, reading, preparation and getting the job done.

I updated my wii with wiikey 1 and now i have some trouble with some games but some of them seems to work
can i downgrade or is ther an other way to solve this
The reason you are having trouble with some games is probably because any update to 4.2+ will kill a modchip's out of region ability to play games.
Which i am afraid happened to me today when updating to 4.3e. My wiikey2 is useless now.Quote:

That's what I thought and hoped. However all my games are PAL, none work anymore. I'll be testing some more today, otherwise softmodding will be next. I did see some cool screenshot of a videostore-like selection window to choose your games from HDD. That looked marvellous;-)Quote:
