    Ios

I read the thread from the recommended section and nowhere in the thread did it actually say what IOS stands for. Anyone know? I take it that the WiiKey update would have the IOS needed to play NSMB or why install it? When reading the tutorial, I was expecting to at least have a definition of the term being used. I am guessing that IOS is some kind of sector.

In Wii terms, IOS = BIOS. Look here.

According to the article you referred me to, it only applies to softmodding. Since I have a wiikey hard mod, I don't see how this applies to me.

hmmm, well your wii has them installed, harmodded or softmodded. It is what the wii uses to perform it's various functions. In the case of harmodding the wii console still needs them and the reason a person would perform system updates is to attain them.
Softmodders have just opened up a window to manually install them is all that is different.

You asked what an IOS was. Nightsah linked you to a page that explains them in detail and what their function is. IOS apply to any Wii, not just softmods.

I read his link and appreciate it, however, it never really said what I O S stood for. Just curious. So if I take all the system upgrades, I should be up to date on the IOS's.
Correct? And the only reason I would not take the update is if I wanted to run wad files, etc. And that would be why I would be missing the required IOS's. Am I correct in this assumption?

This is the reason softmodding has become popular among current modchip users. Along with ios's, system menu updates also come with deterrents to stop all modding. Older system menu versions come with trucha enabled ios that allows for wad installing, once you update with the official nintendo updates, you loose that as well as the ability to play games out of your region for disk based hardmods.
Updating a hardmod wii will install the ios files, but it will do other things to remove your ability to play backups as well, since the emergence of the 4.2 system menu, not many modchip manufactures have done anything as far as updates in their firmware to reinstate the function 4.1 or below users have.

Thanks! I appreciate the explanation, oddgriffin. From what I understand, the long awaited firmware update (1.99) for the wiikey has solved this problem and I have read that it works fine with 4.2. I will install it and I will post my findings to the forum.
