I have a Wiikey, 1.9s, probably an ancient version of the Wii Firmware - what next?

    Hi,

I have a very old Wii, probably first batch of Wii's when they came out years ago in Canada. I modded it with an original Wiikey.

About a year ago I updated the Wiikey to 1.9s to play Rockband expansion pack and Wii Olympics. Since then I haven't touched the Wii.

Any suggestions on how to get my Wii back in shape? Ideally I'd like to play the latest games including Beatles Rockband. I'm pretty noob, so please be detailed on what I should and shouldn't do.

Should I take it out? is it unsafe now?
Should I just soft mod my wii?

    Thanks!

    Hi

Lets see if i can give a more intelligent answer than the one above

    I have a Wiikey 1 with 1.9s and 3.4E
So far there has not been a game i have not been able to play , although some games need to be run through Gecko OS (Wii Sports Resort & NSMB using gecko codes)
in fact i just block the disc channel with a pin code and run everything through gecko just to make sure the kids do not update by accident

The main things i can advise is to get the Homebrew channel installed and Gecko OS this will allow you to run the games without having to update the Wii and of course run other region games.

I have softmodded my other Wii and again that works fine but Read the guides here until you fully understand them before you attempt anything.
Softmodding of course has more flexibilty with USB Loaders etc

    Hope this helps

i have the same scenario here, but just that I'm running 4.2u already.

    first gen wii, with wiikey1.
no, i don't need wiikey fusion, I softmodded mine.
gonna try the wii sports resort tonight with neogamma, just for kicks.
the game itself cannot update my wii anymore, so I guess there will be no problem.

if I have a problem at all, I can just burn the game to a dvd and let wiikey handle it.

my old wii is almost on the same scenario as well, 4.2u and 1.9s

what i can advise you is to softmod it, the 4.2 guide, use cios 38 rev 17, neogamma, uloader, then put priiloader so you can to take advantage of the hacks and also make sure you have bootmii so you have a nand back up, and last but not the least, use dop-ios mod to trucha bug every ios in that wii

i used to run my games on neogamma, now after the dop ios mod, all my games run on the disc channel taking advantage of the wii key, don't need softchip for the band hero as well. i've even region changed my wii to 4.2e because i live now in nz and converted my wiikey to pal. it plays either pal or ntsc now. its the best condition my wii has ever been in after dop-ios mod. i think its because of the region free hack on priiloader and the trucha on dop

Outstanding post. Concise AND accurate, a rare combination around here. Thanks!

Exact same system on my end. I can confirm this works beautifully. But make sure you are running the latest Gecko (oooold one did not work).

How do you block the disc channel with a pin code? Great idea, but I can't find the option anywhere. TIA.

Thanks nice to know i helped in some way

Anyhow to block the disc channel you go to the perental controls section in the WII menu

    Pick a pin code

then just block all games and then they will not run from the disc channel without the pin but the HBC will run fine

I havent touched my Wii in ages. Im pretty sure my Wiikey v1 has been updated to 1.9S.

I have a lot of backed up games on dvd that I want to make sure continue to work - is there any update I should NOT do. Eg. 4.2

Reason why I want to get my Wii up to date is so I can try New Super Mario.
Very interested in loading from USB or SD instead of DVD. I have done a bit of reading but a lot of it is over my head and there seems to be so many different ways to do it. Can someone explain what is the easiest way to get it working via USB without affecting dvd games.

all you need to do is avoid all Online Updates if you want your wiikey still working and able to play out of region games. As for usb loading, you can just softmod your wii using dogeggs guide and that should give you all the required stuff to play newer games and allow USB loading. There is a guide by davepm to get NSMB to work.
