    Us Is WiiKey2 dead?

For the last year or so, WiiKey2 has been great. It allows me to play backups of games from other regions. This is all I used it for. No homebrew, softmods, or anything else.

The way I understand it, is that if I upgrade to firmware 4.2 I will now loose the ability to play all of my backups from other regions.

Everyone keeps saying, "just stay at 4.1, don't upgrade to 4.2". The problem is, games are starting to be released that require 4.2 (like Wii Fit Plus). As time goes on, more and more games will probably check for (or install) version 4.2.

So to my question: For those of us that only have the WiiKey2, and only use it to play backups from other regions, are we now out of luck?

    Is the WiiKey2 dead?

thats why we have softmodding. I have the wiikey2 installed on mines but also got softmodding installed as well. Softmodding is very easy to do. You can then install the required ios for new games so that you dont have to worry about upgrading to 4.2 to get your ios needed. Just look up dogeggs 3.1-4.1 any wii softmodding tutorial.

I thought with a modchip you need not to fear for a firmware update.
That was the main reason to get a chip and not to make a softmod, or i am wrong in my information

Why you have softmod and chip? Is there a special reason for that?

with softmod and a chip the best of both worlds. modchip not on 4.2 you can use the reg disc loader to load all games. and if some reason your wii updates to out of region or something that will brick you u have a nand backup to fix some bricks with preload and hackmii or bootmii as boot2 to reinstall the nand like a system restore when you mess up windows.

But I think the heart of the matter is no longer is that axom that wiikey2 made us hard modders immune to firmware updates.

I recenty converted to a USB hard drive and am using the past DVDs as only a storage medium.
The USB hard drive option is awesome. I have preloader booting into wiiflow right when I turn on the console.

I can grab my wiimote, sit on the couch, turn on the TV, power on the wii from the wiimote, load right into wiiflow (or USB gecko GX should you be inclined), and select from my game library without ever getting up to put in a disk. The load times are amazing too.

So, my friends, I will keep the wiikey2 inside the console of course, but times are changin

Smile USB Hard drive on newest wii's?

I just bricked my 2 year old d2c unit and was thinking of getting a second unit anyway. Will the USBloader option work on even the newst wii that I might find on a store shelf?? Also does anyone know if I can simply take the dvd drive out of the new wii and put my good working d2ckeyed dvd drive in from the bricked system?

    Thanks

Well seeing how there is the worry about 4.2 and all. I keep my system menu on 3.2 and use my softmod to install the required ios. But as for softmodding really goes. I just use it so that I can have a video player on the wii. I get tired of draging the compuer around and hooking it up to the tv just to watch a movie or something. There is no downfall for using softmod. The main reason why I got hardmodded was because I like to load my games through the disc channel instead of bothing with neogamma or usb loader or any other of those programs.
