After giving up on trying to fix the broken drive on my Wii a year ago, I've decided to just buy a new drive, and I might as well buy a chip too. My question is, can i update to 4.1u without damaging the wiikey, like not load backups anymore? my wii is on version 3.4u. Also will it be safer to update before or after the chip is installed?
Also i dont plan to install HBC so that wont be an issue.
Update anytime you like. Nintendo can't touch hardmods with a software update.
I'm in a similar situation. I've got an LU51 Wii with a WiiKey2 (or at least that's what the guy who installed it told me) and 3.4u. I've also got Homebrew Channel 2.5b. The guy who installed my wiikey2 told me to never upgrade, but I can't get some of the newer games to work without updating. Can I just do a network update? Will my Homebrew Channel stay intact?
General rule of thumb is update if you have a hardmod and don't if you have a softmod, or at least don't unless you know what the consequences could be.
One better option is to update using Waninkoko 4.0 or 4.1 updater but I still bet you'll need to install some IOS or accept that disc update.

Anyone with WiiKey2 experiencing the same problem? I bought and installed WiiKey2 just before this summer. I don't have any softmod done on my Wii. I'm puzzled at why some still work and some no longer do. Every disc worked before the 4.1 update. Help!
when did you update, you know that 4.2 is the current update thru Nintendo.
I updated last night Sep 29, 2009! Half of my backups no longer working. Anyone reading this. Don't do it!
I've updated to 4.1 too and now nothing works.
Originally had 3.3U and most games loaded fine.
Maybe I shouldn't have updated. Still working on a fix. Also unable to downgrade.
I have WiiKey 2 i think and have 4.1 FW and can still run all my backups no problem. I don't have any other softmods and have updated my Wii through the wireless network a few times to 4.1 and everything is still working.
Now if only i can figure out if i should update through the game disc of Beatles Rockband without bricking my Wii.. =] Any thoughts?
