please be telling me how to enable magic quotes in a .htaccess file that doesnt lead to an internal server error 500

and I cant edit the php.ini, Because my web host won't allow me to access it

Well I'd strongly recommend against enabling magic quotes, if im not mistaken currently in PHP5 it's depreciated and in 6 it is going to be removed for good.....you might leave yourself ina mess if your webhost upgrades.

Why do you need magic quotes anyway? I'd suggest using addslashes() as this performs the same function.
Really you'd only use this functionality if you're dealing with SQL which then I'd suggest using the following functions to make sure any variables are SQL safe.

strip_tags()
htmlspecialchars()
mysql_escape_string() or addslashes()

At least you gave me a good answer. Its all fixed now, I got a friend to get it running by making a subdomain with its own php.ini file....

I need magic quotes because a PHP plugin Im using that manages a game server bans system via a Mysql database needed it.
