Problem with playing US games on Wii that has changed region

I finally was able to softmod my Wii that I bought from Japan over and changed everything to English using the softmod any Wii guide, which was very helpful. While doing so, I managed to change my region to US as well. After seeing my success, my friend asked me to do the same for his Japanese Wii, which I did successfully, and then using the guide to removing softmod from any Wii, also on the site. However, after removing the softmod and updating to 4.3U from Nintendo, the Wii is unable to play US games.

According to AnyRegion Changer's wiki page, the changes are "non-temporary". Shouldn't this mean that the changes stay in effect even after the softmod is removed? The menus and everything are still in English. Or does removing the softmod revert the Wii back to Japan region?

    Thanks.

Although I dont have an answer may I ask a question-why would you want to remove the softmod? It doesnt affect your regular gameplay in the least.

It's actually my friend's who asked me to get his to English/US, the Wii I own is kept modded, but I figure I might as well convert his back to 4.3U because he isn't really technology savvy, and I don't want to be blamed if he accidentally bricks his Wii. But alas, I think it might be a physical problem, nothing works, and the Disc Channel shows the disc spinning, then the error message pops up saying that it has a disc read error.

Why don't you just softmod it with the softmod any wii guide, it will install priiloader and block updates, enable region free, etc.

If my 6 year old hasn't bricked mine yet, I think it's fool proof.
