Would softmod with wrong drive chip cause "permanent damage?"

After looking up my serial number at Wiidrives I learned that there's a 75% chance that my Wii has the chip that would allow usage of burned discs. I'm not necessarily that crazy about it except that hard drive prices are pretty high now so it would be nice.

My question is would softmod of any kind screw things up if it turns out that mine is part of the 25% that has a chip which won't read burned discs? I mean would it just not work or would it screw anything up?

Also a general question is I'm guessing I don't want to do the standard online update through Nintendo, as that might limit my ability to mod in some ways? I said no for now as I figure it wouldn't hurt to just postpone the update until later, even if I don't have access to some standard features from the standard factory update.

    Thanks in advance!

It would just not work although usb loading still would. No need to update officially u can basically get on any fw you desire via softmod

    Lightnight fast response!

Thanks! So does USB imply an external hard drive, or is it possible to even use an external optical drive that would read, and perhaps burn discs?
