    If you are using one of the new controllers with motion plus built in it will lose sync at the press 1 screen. Try a different wiimote.

    I did
    sudo mkdosfs -F 32 -v /dev/sdd1
    I tried a fresh download right after I started the thread. I also tried (just to try it) cloning all files in all directories.
    It runs smoothly until the "press 1" screen.

    Yes, I ran into that. The wiimote shuts right down. I thought the batteries were dead.
    I used the old controller and it pressing 1 does nothing. I'll try a really old controller to be sure.

    Try force-clearing all the synced remotes (hold the sync button on the console for at least 15 seconds) and then re-syncing them (press the sync button on the console, then on the remote). That might help.
