    Upgrading my Wii help

Hello, Im new with this Wii stuffs.
I just received my wii several years ago. Apparently, I haven't played with it for some time. It just happened that I have the time now to play with it. Now it comes to my mind to upgrade my wii so it will be able to play latest games. So I don't know anything, except maybe about the homebrew and stuffs. I know theres some tutorials in here but it is best to have a one on one to avoid bricking my wii.
So what do I need to do? How can I check what ver is my wii on and the things I need to mention before helping me?
    thanks

Have you already softmodded before? If you read the softmod any wii guide a few times before starting it, you will be fine. It's actually pretty noob friendly. You can check what ver your on by clicking the Wii button in the lower left corner then click wii settings. Your system menu version will be in the upper right corner.

No, I havent done that. My Wii is softmodded when I received it(so I don't know anything what the modder did). Well I guess I will try reading some of the tutorials here but I will be happy if anyone can help me .
ps: I just checked my ver. its 41u. Um.......do I really need to update my wii to the latest one for it to play latest games? Is there anything that I could use for this purpose? thanks

There is one school of thought you'll hear which is "if it's not broken, don't fix it". In your case, my personal thought is that it depends on if you have the proper backups. Do you have a NAND back up? A backup homebrew channel? If not, then definitely follow the Softmod Any Wii guide, you can start from the spoiler for people with hbc already installed.

yeah I think I have that. I saw a backup channel(not sure if it is the one). and by the way I have already a hbc.
So what do I need to do?

Follow the softmod any Wii guide. It will overwrite whatever was done already. No need to update your system menu, the guide will install all the necessary IOS needed for new games.

ok thanks....lets see what I can do...
before anything else: I can just select any region right? if not how can I know what my Wii region is.
    last questions:
*is it guarantee that I can able to load/play latest games after I update my wii using the guide?
because right now I have only few games and some of it would not load.(some will error002, some will just stay black, green screen, and error loading disk).
*How can I know if the game will not load because of the system not because of the disk itself(scratches). because some of the games will first open the regular wii screen then sometimes it will say "cant run the game please check the ....(something like that)" then I will just remove the disk and clean it and it will run.
so any idea how? or why? or appropriately tell me why some games will not run.

I have done it. but still I get The Game Disc Could not be read error. oh well.......thanks anyways. will still check from time to time if anyone can help.
ps:the main reason that I want to upgrade my wii is to play some games that have errors. but apparently after doing the guide its still there. I cant able to load some games. sometimes only the warning/caution page shows then it went black then the error appears(the disk could not be read and the error). am I missing something?
can anyone teach me the best setting for the wii? like what ios should be it on and the settings when running games.
