Potential Wii purchaser with lots of questions

So I'm planning to get a Wii for my daughter and potentially something I can play with. I like a lot of the classic games that I used to play when I was a kid (Super Mario, Zelda) on SNES. I'm mainly interested in modding it with the soft mod. I'm looking at a lot of the Wii bundles at the store. I have a couple of questions.

    1. I was told the black wii is not good, it is not backwards compatible with the game cube games and it's difficult to mod.
    2. Is there anything I need to know about "different types of non-modable wii" that would cause a problem with the softmod. I'm thinking of getting the white mod with no games (109 at wallmart).
    3. I've been reviewing the softmod material. It seems you insert a sd card with the program loaded then backup your current firmware then make the update ???

    Thanks

If you make your first threa HERE, someone will greet you with lots of info.

But I'll try and answer a couple for you.

    1. The new Wii's that don't have Gamecube compatibility can still be softmodded, but people have been having trouble with the new wiimotes with the wii motion built in.
    2. Any Wii can be softmoded. But the reasons in 1. I would go for one with gamecube ability.
    3. Read the info after your intro post to answer any more questions.

    1. The blue $99 wii is the one that does not have GC support. Older black wiis have GC support but ANY wii you buy new will not be able to load games via backed up disc but can load from external hard drive. (Unless there was a new release of the black wii I'm not aware of.)

    2. Other than the blue wii, the off the shelf white wii will be the same as the black I mentioned above. All wiis can be modded regardless of color.

    3. You don't really back up your firmware, you modify it and install things in place of things that exist already. Think of the firmware (aka system menu) as Windows, and the other things (ios's and cios) as drivers. If you stick to the guide you'll be fine. Hope this helps a little.

edit: fast response time, lol. 3 people typing at once

There is a new black Wii, that comes with NSMB. I seen it at Costco today. It is just like that Hawaiian blue one but black.

There is an new black wii that came out that has some new super mario disk with a soundtrack CD. It also comes with a steering wheel. If you go to amazon.com lots are giving it 1 star because it won't play GC games.
