Thanks for the note, mauifrog! Even if the smash stack exploit had worked, I would have still gotten hung up at the hackmii screen. I'll post my (hopefully successful) results here in the hopes of working towards solving this problem for others.
I don't know if this will help at all, but sounds like there is a small chance my experience could relate to yours:
I successfully softmodded 3 of the new Blue Wii with no GC support (wii motion plus built into remote). At first the homebrew software would only ever respond the one remote that came with that console. Once i launched a game, i could enter the wii menu and find the 2nd remote. IF my 1 remote didn't work properly it sounds like i would have had the same problem you're having.
The 1st suggestion was to sync your remote, but it was unclear if you tried it inside homebrew, or on the wii system menu. It took me a bit to get my other wiimotes syncronized, but once i figured out two things they all synched up no problem and have been very reliable (even within homebrew):
1. Synchronize from the main Nintendo system menu
2. Hold the remote RIGHT up to the sensor bar (within inches, a few feet wouldn't work) while pressing the sync buttons.
Maybe a long shot but good luck!
I can confirm that an old remote works. Homebrew installed, bootmii installed, I'm off to the races. THANK YOU!!!!!!
Hello, thanks to maui for the link to this thread because i have the exact same problem as you do! Except i found the solution. The wiimote is definitly the problem. I'm trying to install homebrew channel to a friend who just bought the wii. Mine is a year old, and softmodded too, with my wiimotes with wii motion plus inside. everything worked flawlessly. When i tried to softmod my friends wii (which is brand new, he bought it like 2days ago), his wiimote disconnect on the scam screen. Then i sync'ed my wiimote on his wii, and every steps went all fine. You can't use that wiimote for any application from homebrew channel. But they work when you are in game i.e. playing just dance backup and wiimote will sync. Both wiimotes are black the only difference i see is the one who didn't work in with homebrew channel app has a sync button on the batteries cap. Mine hasn't, i have to remove the cap to sync the wiimote. Maybe a different rev idk, but the wiimote is the problem.
