Should I update from 4.2u?

I just got my Wii all hooked up and working again, I modded it probably about two years ago and haven't touched it since. I have 4.2u on it soft modded with the 1GB SD card and have it to auto boot into USB Loader GX on start up with a 16GB flash drive as my storage system I just bought a few hours ago. I tried putting the new Zelda game on the flash drive with WBFS Manager 1.2 for Mac and everything went well. Only problem is that evert time I load it, or try to load it, it just brings me to the OE Wii menu. I have a disc in the drive to fake the licensing issues for loading backups but I'm just thinking maybe this is like PS3 country were they disable features unless you update the console?

Do I need to update from 4.2u to play the newest games off of my flash drive using USB Loader GX?
Maybe I need to update USB Loader GX to play this title? I don't really know what I'm doing wrong but I'm in the process of trying an older game that I know was working on here.

When you did your softmod, was there ever anything mentioned about not taking official Nintendo updates? I'm pretty sure that has been the logic for a long time, so just wondering.

I didn't take the update, I just figured I'd ask if I should update my Wii cause I have 4.2u and I know there are ways to soft mod 4.3 now so if I updated my Wii could that be whats stopping newer games from loading?

..and obviously I wouldn't be installing an update from Nintendo, I've been modding consoles since the original xbox first came out and you never take an update from the distributer without unlocking, cracking, jail breaking, or loading your own kind of custom firmware into it to make the mod still valid.

I was just curious if it's worth updating to the latest that's softmodable

if you update then you will lose your boot2 and if you lose that then its hard (if it can be done at all) to recover from a brick if something were to happen.

Ok, so to put this in easier terms.. how to unsoftmod my wii, update to 4.3 so I have Netflix and the latest stable release, then softmod it again so I can use USB Loader GX and don't have to risk my discs getting scratched

I don't see how this is helping.. I've also updated USB Loader GX and now my Wii will only boot into PriiLoader, as well as refusing to boot the original Wii Menu.. so Now I kinda have to start over because my Wii will only boot into PriiLoader and nothing else.

Does anyone have some Helpful information on how I can update my Wii to 4.3U and start over fresh? I'm almost considering to just buying a second hand wii off of eBay and doing it all over again.

Is it a white screen with a list of options or a black screen with 4 options?

I can't pretend to know enough to tell you if you should or should not, but I can tell you what I did and the results.
I recently followed the guide to safely upgrade to 4.3u which completed without issues, then I went through the whole softmod guide again to update the cios's to the latest and the newest Wiiflow. Results: With the newer cios I can now play metroid trilolgy properly through its main menu, dead space now has audio, several other games are more stable. I did install the netflix channel and it work. However, I still cannot play Zelda Skyward Sword from the original disk because it still wants to update the system. I have to run in from the usb drive from wiiflow, which is preferable to me anyway. So if it were mine and I could still get into HBC, I would do the same thing - safe update system, reinstall the cios over the top of what's there, rather than trying to fully unmod and start over. Again, just going by my personal experience, i'm no expert.

Oh, I misread your latest post there, if you can't load the Wii Menu, I don't know.
