Soft Modded Wii no longer reading backup discs but does read originals

I had a guy soft mod my wii about a month ago so I could backup all my games ( i hve 3 little scratchy kids lol). He made it so it wouldnt update and have the soft mod removed (been there, done that). Its played fine until a week ago one game constantly said it couldnt read the disc in the middle of us playing, Id pop it out, wiped it clean, then it would play (though this disc was new and spotless everytime!). A few days later it wouldnt load the game at all, (homebrew would launch though and i got the initial screen where it tells you how to hold the remote). So I tried my other newly burnt discs, and one really old one and none of my backups work. BUT it does play original discs, some that are pretty scratched up. So Im really lost on this one. If it was a laser problem or dirt Id think nothing would play, original or backup. But then I dont know what couldve went wrong, nothing happened, nothing updated, nothing dropped. HELP! Thanks : )

To be honest i would scrap the DVD loading and go USB loading! You can get a HDD for close to the cost of DVD Media nowadays....

That has been on my to do list. Do you have a link that can show me how to do the usb thing? I know he installed a usb loader. and do I use iso files? Im going to test this out on a 16gbfew thumb drive first. If this fixes the problem ill go get a hdd.
