    Pre modded drives

My kids Wii won't read any disks at all. I wanted to replace the optical drive laser module but I thought, since I'll be in there anyway, why not chip it?
After consulting the Wii s/n database, I find that "there is a 75% chance the chipset is GC2-D2C (v1)".
Also, I see that there are pre modded optical drive boards available.

I wonder if I could kill two birds with one stone by buying one of these modded drives and simply install it as is.

What else should I be looking at while this Wii is in pieces on the slab?

    Thanks

    Sure, but softmodding is free.

why? If you soft mod you wont need the optical drive at all. Just bypass it with a USB loader and spend the 75-100 bucks on a external HDD. then rip all your games to the HDD. never need a disk again and wont worry about swapping games, scratched disks, or any of that hassle.

And to soft mod right? Don't you need a bootable disk, even to flash through USB?

I've never done it....seen it done....and I'm still reading up. Your input is appreciated! Big time!

All the computers in my house run Ubuntu which rips and burns reliably.

So long as the drive is "seen" by the system (meaning, not electrically dead), you can softmod and also use USB. If the drive is totally dead, then you would not be able to softmod or USB. It sounds like you'd be OK if it's just the laser...

It should be noted that ripping a Wii disc is no easy task if you're not doing it on the Wii, however... you can't just shove it into any reader or burner and extract the image.

True. There are terminal run applications for dumping Wii DVD contents onto a drive, but not just any DVD drive can handle it, the dump takes half the night and getting the apps compiled, installed and set is fiddly...to put it nicely!
I'm finding this out right now!

It is a PITA to deal with ripping Wii/GC discs on a computer with a busted optical drive on your Wii... just takes too much time to do it...

So, do you think installing a pre modded drive might be the prudent course of action?
