Playing ripped DVD's from external HD

    Hi Guys,

I have successfully soft moded my Wii, thanks to this site and its members. Thank you. Playing Wii games without any issues. Now I want to know if it is possible to play ripped dvds from the same external HD which has the wii games on. If it is possible what format can I play. VOB, ISO etc and can covers be added.

I suspect that the play back quality might not be as good as a Apple TV/Itunes/External NAS, but this might certainly be a cheaper solution.

Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I could not find anything by searching the forum.

    Cheers

You could try looking into Mplayer CE or WiiMC.

    Did you find anything yet?

I have found that WiiMC does not seem to work very well for this. But have not tried anything else yet

You can use a program such as DVD shrink and rip the DVD to your pc hdd and then use a video app to stick them in a avi container but be warned the Wii can't handle high bitrate movies so you will have to take this into consideration when converting.

I have successfully installed WiiMC (thanks for the suggestion) and runs without any issues, except that it does not recognise my external HD. I have had my Wii softmod'd for a while and can play my backup games without any issues. So recognises the external HD without issue, but in WiiMC I only see the SD card and drive. Any suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly received.

Are you able to play a movie and access the menu, right from the DVD using WiiMC?

I could not, and had to launch the individual files. But I did not spend much time with it before looking online for others in similar situations.

In my case, it is an original DVD.

But I was just trying to get a sense of how it it operated with an actual DVD, then see if that could be duplicated from a ripped copy on the HDD.

WiiMC is great! It reads a ton of file formats as well. If you are going to rip full dvd isos you will need an ntfs partition or will have to split the file to work on fat32. I have never had much luck with original or burned dvds though, they will play but not correctly. Rip it to your hdd and watch it. Here is a link for wiimc with a list of supported file types.
