Can I hack and play backups with no/broken optical drive?

I used to have a Wii a year or so ago, but it was collecting dust so I decided to sell it. Now I recently got a PS3 and decided to hack it, and have decided that doing the same to a Wii could solve my problem of becoming bored with the system. So I have started looking for a cheap used system and have found a couple on eBay or Craig's List for cheap with broken optical drives.

I have read the tutorials and FAQs pretty well through and have a good idea of what I need to do but I have one question that I need answered before I drop some money on a Wii.

My question is will I have any problems, restrictions, etc. hacking and playing backup games/Wiiware/VC titles from an HDD with no or missing optical drive? I ask this because I know with a hacked PS3 it is recommended/required that you have any original game disc in the drive to play backups, and I was wondering if this is the case with the Wii.

    Thank you!

For USB loading i believe you still need to have a DVDdrive in the unit to be seen by the OS of the wii.... but do not need to able to read disc's... It is not the same as the PS3!

You should take a look at the MAILBomb in the Softmod Any Wii Guide!!!

Okay, so as long as my system recognizes that I have an optical drive, even if it doesn't spin discs, etc., I'm fine?

Couldn't find MAILBomb in the Softmod Any Wii Guide, sorry I'm dumb...
