    USB Harddrive/Thumbdrive: Is Hardmod neccessary?

Please forgive if this is in the wrong category, but I don't know where else to put it since I am definitely a noob. I am getting confused because I thought from the quide that a softmod wii uses usb harddrive for storing backup games and playing them without discs (and then I wouldn't have to change disc which would be awesome). Then I read a post that said only hardmodding can allow USB. What is up with that?

Also, can someone reccomend a model/s of external harddrive that would be most compatible with wii usb because I don't want to waste money buying something that won't work. The only harddrive I currently have that is external is a Retail Plus 1Tb. It would be especially good if the harddrive didn't separate power supply, such as a usb powered 2.5 inch. I had planned to try using my Zune as a usb harddrive, but it turns out Zune's can't be modded that way. Thanks so much.

You are referring to gamecube backups. They can only be read from disk if softmodded, else a hardmod is required to play from usb source.

There is a compatability thread in the recommended guides section for harddrives

Thanks so much. That helps a lot. But FYI to others, I had to google "wii hacks harddrive compatibility" to get the list.
