Playing Wii games from my SD card

I have previously posted a thread on here about my issues in trying to get USB Loader/Wii flow/ Configurable USB Loader to work on my Wii. The other day, in the process of trying to get my Wii to read games off a USB stick I accidentally discovered that I could play them off an SD card.

I was in the Configurable USB menu and was trying to mount my USB device. It wasn't working, so out of frustration I changed the option from USB device to SD/SDHC card and the thing worked. For some reason I had a game loaded onto the SD card (It was New Super Mario Bros Wii so it was small enough to fit comfortably on my 1GB Sandisk SD Card). Maybe everyone else knew this aready but it was news to me!

Theoretically, would I be able to buy a 32GB or bigger Sd card or micro SD card with SD adaptor, rip games to that devie and let the SD carf take the place of the HDD? I appreciate the capacity of an SD card would be less than that of a HDD, but I was thinking that I could have an SD card specifically for games that my kids like to play and have another one for me.

Could this approach bring any risks? Is it true that Wiis don't ike SDHC cards?

No it's still there but it had gone cold and I wasn't entirely sure that this was the same topic.

This one is a question about SD cards. That one was an issue with a HDD.

repeated inserting and removal can cause wear on the sd card slot. Yes the Wii doesnt particularily like SDHC cards. better off buying a HDD that is on the compatibility list.

Thanks Slimercanada. I've tried three different HDDs that are on the compatibility list and none of them work. This despite following a softmod guide to the letter.

Is the HDD inserted into the right USB port? Seems stupid to ask but thought i should give it a try. Perhaps the USB port is just dead after all it can happen just like on a regular PC.

Have you tried anything else at all in that port such a microphone or instrument?

Also, did you try a different USB cable.. I know on one of my HDD's with a mini-usb, certain cables (namely, one that came with a camera) do not work..

I've never consulted the HDD compatibility list, and every external drive I have works fine on the wii with the CFG loader.

Slimercanada: I ran a media player app and managed to play some mp4 files from a USB flash drive in the port needed by USB loaders. That is leading me to think the port is fine.

Bombasylvania: I did try a diferent cable and, similarly, had no luck. It doens't work if I use any of the three USB devices i have, all of which are on the compatibility list.

further to your USB question what file system are you trying to use and have you tried to use a different one?

I'm using FAT32 but I've previously used WBFS.

I had a look at my syscheck again and compared it to the syscheck guide in your sig. There are a few differences. One is that my IOS249 is displayed as IOS249[38]. Any idea if the squars brackets mean anything?
