Has my disk drive pooped out on me?

Last night, i popped in my copy of SSBB and i got the "Disc could not be read" error. Tried a few different games, and they all said that without the splash coming up on the channel. It would just make a "click...click...click" sound whenever i insterted a disk and it would not start to spin. So, i dissasembled my wii and tryed cleaning off the laser with a Q-Tip as i heard that might fix the problem. It did not, so i tried hand moving the motor and i was having diffifulty reaching it and i decided to move the laser over a little. It had a little bit of resistance and i moved it over. Stuck the disk in, and B I N G O is started to spin again. I fully assembled my wii, and hooked it back up the the TV. F A I L O SSBB starting up, and i immediatly recieved an error. Sonic and the Secret Rings also started up, but then it errored after the wrist strap screen. Resident Evil 1 was able to boot up without erroring but i did not test it as i could not locate my GC controller. I inserted Wii sports, it's splash did not come up in the disk channel and i got my trademark three clicks again. How can i solve this for good?

Either the motor (likely) or the laser (less likely) based on symptoms. You can buy these individual pieces on Flea Bay, provided you have mechanical skills (you getting this far, should be doable).

As long as I don't have to solder i should be able to do it. I do have a soldering gun if i do need to solder but it would take some practice.

i actually googled "fleabay" and when i came up with no results i noticed you meant ebay. Although you could probably find some fleas there.
EDIT: do you recomend any sellers? will a used one work for me and also do the motors have to go with a specific drive?

Not for this I don't have any handy. I bought an entire drive (DVD + PCB) for my D3-2 and did a swap out. Parts are parts, I do believe --- I've seen them before on there and generally they have been listed as "new" unless otherwise noted. Looks like the motors run about $9 including shipping. Lasers look to be $10-$12.

Alright, last question does this operation requrie a soldering iron to complete?

The laser itself, no --- you'd be fine. I don't think there's a wiihacks tutorial or guide, but I found this one. The spindle motor or movement motor does require some soldering/desoldering. If you click the link, you'll see a few tutorials on the right hand side relating to those.

I replaced a motor complete NO soldering. It Came with ribbon conector. ebay £8.00 Just be careful when you open catches on ribbon connectors, Google it i found a great photo guide. Works a dream again.

It's generally NOT recommended to pm mods, especially if you are not a site donator. In fact it is against the rules However, on this matter it may be acceptable to contact one of those mentioned.
