Please help, lockups in Cfg USB Loader, games, after following 4.3 softmod guide

Hi, I've been having lockups after following the 4.3 softmod guide. I tried posting about this on the softmod thread (post #3474) yesterday. I know double-posting is frowned upon, but after about a day, despite a bunch of other questions and answers subsequent to mine, I didn't get a single response. What's the proper thing to do at this point?

The one paragraph summary is that I'm a newbie, softmodded my Wii using a guide not from wiihacks, but it wouldn't work with Rock Band 3 usb instruments. So then I found wiihacks, tried the 222/223/224 fix but that didn't work. Then I followed the 4.3 softmod guide and now get too-frequent lockups on Configurable USB Loader and when starting games.

For full details about my system, syscheck, etc, they're on page 348 of the 4.3 SoftMod Guide, post #3474.

    Thanks for any help,
    Jerry

while u've "completely" done the 4.3 Sofmod Guide, would changing the Cfg Loader versions (e.g v57, 60, 62) with selection of the cios (e.g. 249, 222, 250,..) settle the frequent lockups ?
    tried ???
    what's ur usbHDD ? format status ?

I can try different versions of Cfg Loader. I see the download page for cfg loader versions. It looks like they come paired with a particular cios - 222 or 249, but I don't see any 250s. I think all I need to do is replace the boot.dol with the appropriate file from there. Is that correct? Is there any method to determine good ones to use besides trial and error?

Up to this point, I haven't really tried anything, because I didn't want to make things worse by trying random things without getting advice first. Before about a week ago I hadn't even heard of softmodding.

I have a Cirago 250GB drive. I didn't have any lockups despite a lot of use after the first softmod I did using a non-wiihacks guide. Which makes me thing the problem is not with the drive. It's formatted with FAT32.

    Thanks.

Use the 222 version. You just have to rename the boot.dol file.

Should I just start with v65 and work my way backwards? Does my syscheck look ok, or should I follow your "Update All Your IOS's" first?

Your sysCheck is actually what I would consider perfect. My IOS update guide is not helpful for loaders, since regular IOS's are only used by the disc channel. Your IOS's are all up to date anyway. I haven't tried v65 yet (I have 64), but it is a stable release so I don't see why you shouldn't try it. Just make sure you stick with the 222 version, and I recommend that you don't use alpha or beta versions. While they are usually fine, I have had a couple crash on me before.

Thanks for the assurance on sysCheck! That actually makes me feel a lot better. Ok, I had been running v58, so I tried the v65 and v64 (both 222) dol files. Both times I tried going into Wii Sports after booting. v65 locked up when I hit A to select the game, before it even said it was trying to load, but on the screen where it would normally say it was loading.

v64 seeeeems to be behaving so far (when it starts, it says v64-222, 222-mload, 250[FRAG].), after a couple of runs of Wii Sports...then I return to main screen...and I just hit B on Super Mario Bros, then hit the power button on the wiimote and it locked up. I suppose I can keep trying other versions of cfg, but...any other suggestions of what things to try?

As I said earlier, in my initial softmod, I never had lockups, but then I was using USB Loader GX. Of course I had a different set of cios's too. Ok, to go through it systematically, what can effect this? Wii hardware should all be the same. So, something bad in the OS, but you said all my cios's look good. Problem with communication with or error on the usb drive. Problem with software on the SD card.

I'm disinclined to this it's the usb drive, since I had no problems with USB Loader GX in my other configuration. Of course, then it was WBFS, and now I reformatted to FAT32. Similarly, same SD card as before, so unlikely anything physically wrong with it. So, I can reformat my SD and reload it with AnyWii App Pack? I can try changing the drive to WBFS.

Wait a sec, I just saw this note on the thread on installing CFG USB Loader:

1.A - *FAT32/NTFS Drives* (If using WBFS disregard this section)
If using Hermes cIOS222/223 *Rename the "cfg60-222.dol" to boot.dol replacing the current boot.dol*
    You Will Need Hermes 222/223 (222 Revision) - - OR- - cIOSx Rev19 or 20 (249 Revision)
***FAT32/NTFS Loading does NOT work with cIOS Rev 38 Rev 17 - - (Use Hermes cIOS222/223 instead)***

    And I see I'm using:

IOS249 (rev 17): Trucha Bug, ES Identify, NAND Access, USB 2.0

Is IOS249 rev 17 the same thing as cIOS Rev38 Rev 17 that the note mentions?

One other question - after cfg loads, when I'm in the scrolling case screen, the Wiimote cursor will keep freezing for half a second or so. After about a minute or two, it stops doing this. What could be causing this?

There are guides for those two games.

Yes that is the same. You need to be using cfg6*-222.dol for a fat32 drive, not the default 249 version as you have rev17.

My guess would be the hard drive. You can try defragmenting the drive. If that doesn't work, format it with the option "Quick format" unchecked so Windows does a check disk after the format.

Wii Sports is not listed, just Wii Sports Resort, and it says Super Mario Bros should work without modification. So I have to think the random lockup are happening in the loader, unrelated to the games themselves. Maybe due to the drive, loader or something else.

Ok, that's what I was doing. I just thought maybe it meant I needed a different 249 cios installed, but are you saying that if I use cfg*-222.dol, the loader doesn't make use of 249, no matter what I have installed on the NAND?

My gut is telling me (from years of computer experience, not from Wii experience, which I don't have) that it has to do with having switched to FAT32 on the drive, since I had no issues with WBFS, or with some timing issue with FAT32, the drive, and Cfg Loader. I don't think the drive could be fragmented - I formatted it right before the second softmod, so it should be clean. I think I'll try first reformatting the drive to WBFS and trying with Cfg Loader, and if that doesn't work, try USB Loader GX.

The freezing of the Wiimote cursor seems like what one might expect if the loader was periodically accessing the drive in the background, and the drive interrupt was a higher priority than servicing the wiimote communication. Can someone with much more intimate knowledge of the internals of the Wii hardware and Cfg Loader confirm whether this might be the case?

Didn't know sports and resort were 2 different games. Have you tried using a different cIOS to load the games? You can try 222, 223, 224, 247, 248, 249, and 250.

The default cIOS it will use is 222 for all games. You can specify what cios a game will use in CFG Loader if it doesn't work correctly with 222.
