Question Possible quirky softmod, request some expert eyes

I got my Wii in December 2009 and softmodded it shortly thereafter. Unfortunately at the time I was unaware of this amazingly informative site, and followed a guide that I found on a torrent site. For the most part my Wii has been performing quite well although I am sure my setup isn't nearly as clean as it would be had I known about, and followed, the guides on here.

My Wii came with 4.2u installed on it, and that's what it is still running. Have a 500gb Seagate portable hard drive formatted with a WBFS partition and a FAT32 partition (for Wiiware games). I've been using USB Loader GX (07182010/rev 938) and recently installed Mighty Channels.

Here is a current system check to help you know where I'm currently at.

As my initial softmod was done in 2009, I know there's been updates. So I'd like to update my Wii so that I can play the newer games.

I'd also like to update to the newer USB Loader GX 2, so I can enjoy some of the advantages that it offers.

Then I have a couple minor (at least I think they're minor) issues that I would like help with, but I'll put them on the back burner for right now as to not make this too complicated until I get the more major stuff out of the way. :-)

I'd like to thank anyone and everyone for any help that I'm sure I'm about to receive from the very informative and helpful community here. :-)

So the question is? Do you just want to get it up to date? Follow the softmod any Wii guide, don't worry about anything you already have installed.
    Damn I suck!!!!

You can update your game IOS if retail discs are giving you problems.

If everything is working fine then there is no need to update. If a game is giving you problems there are guides on the site showing you what cIOS is needed.

I disagree in this case. This person likely doesn't have priiloader installed and they don't have a patched system IOS. They should follow the softmod any Wii guide, it includes an update option for IOS if needed and it will install all the latest (needed) cIOS.

I agree with krank, updating your system with an up to date guide will have more benifits then not to do so.. not to mention probably more stable.

Did I come off like a jerk?? Read more here

I'd like to thank the three of you for replying, I really value your opinions. :-)

If I do go the route of following a softmod guide, will that mean that I will lose all of my saved game files and Mii characters? I believe that the saved games can be copied to the SD card to back them up, is there also something similar for the Mii characters? I know the softmod guides have you format the SD card several times, so I guess it would be a good idea to move the saved games/Mii characters onto my PC, is there a way to know which specific files/directories would contain what I'm looking to back up?

I'll assume that since my Wii is currently (and originally) running with 4.2u, the best guide to follow would be ShadowSonic2's 4.2 guide.

One other question, I'm currently using a 2gb SD card. Since I'll be starting fresh, would it be a good idea to switch to a larger SD card? Or perhaps an SDHC card?

Thanks again for the help, I am in awe of the knowledge you guys have with this stuff. :-)

Following one of the guides here will not erase any of your saved games or miis. And your 2gb sd card is fine. You can use whatever guide you wish, but Krank has already mentioned using the Softmod ANY Wii guide. There is a link to it in my sig.

Yup, nothing will be erased and use your 2GB card. You can backup the card to your PC before modding and put every thing back on when you are finished.

Use the Softmod any Wii Guide to get the most benifits and updates not the other guide you mentioned.

Thanks guys, I need to read more carefully. I missed the specificity of the "Softmod ANY Wii guide". That's the one I recently used to help a friend, so I'm familiar with that one, so that makes me feel more comfortable redoing my softmod. :-)

I will back up my SD card before I begin. But am I able to chose to not put that data back on the SD card at the end? I'm sure there's extra stuff on the SD card that's not needed but is there becuase of the messed up guide I used when I originally softmodded my Wii. I'm pretty sure it will be ok to not put the data back on the SD card from my current setup. But will skipping that step have any adverse effects?

No problems with that... but if you have anything stored on your SD that you use you will want to keep it.
