    Ca Hard mod chip?

    Hi all,

I have a wii I bought in 2006 and gave it to a friend who took it to a retailer to get a hard mod. It has worked fine for years but now it says it can't read some of the dvd's I bought at the retailer. Also sometimes it freezes while playing store bought games or says it can't read those either. I have a few questions so I'll list them there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    wii sofware version v.1u
    drive chipset gc2-d2c(2)

Can I find out which hard mod chip I have without opening up the wii? (I tried to open it but I don't have that tri screw driver thingie)

Do I need to update the hard mod chip and if so how?

Can I update the wii software?(I havent updated the software in years cuz I was told it will detect the hard mod chip and disable it)

I have a new portable HDD can I download games and play them from there with the hard mod chip I have or do I have to soft mod it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Maggie.

don't worry about D2C modchip f/w update; it didn't happen (correct me, if i'm wrong !)
you couldn't check the modchip, unless opening the Wii plastic enclosure
must have softmod to install usb Loader(s) before you can apply the portable HDD
hardmod chip contributes nothing to HDD plays via usbLoaders, other than installing your legal backup disc into HDD

This needs to be moved to the hardmod backup section, but do you really have System Menu v1.0?

Thanks for the responses. When I go to wii setting it says version v.1u.

Can I update the wii or will that effect the hard mod chip?

I guess I will try to soft mod it so I can use the HDD when I am done soft mod do I need to plug USB HDD into the wii or can I leave HDD plugged into desktop and use wii to play games from HDD via router?

You should be able to update it to 4.1 without a problem. You might have to update the modchip's firmware (check the manufacturer's site), but that is it. Follow the Softmod ANY Wii guide in my signature, then update your IOS's (also in my signature).

So when I turn on the wii and go to wii options then to wii settings then I click on wii system update? And this wont effect the hard mod chip? Also do I do this before I try the soft mod?

    Thanks again for your help.

NOOOOOOOO! DO NOT UPDATE THROUGH NINTENDO!

Sorry I wasn't clear on that. During the softmod guide, you will install System Menu 4.1.

OK thanks something was telling me I could not update through Nintendo, I was just about to click on wii system update and thought this can't be right.

I will try the softmod guide in your signature and let you know how it goes.
