How do I use the alt dol trick?

So I've got my wii hacked fine and got about 18 games on my hard drive.

Trying to get Red Steel 2 working I followed Red Steel 2: How to get it working. and updated the IOS53 and my problem now is that whenever I load the game it don't throw any errors, no nothing. Just reboots the wii back to the system menu.

It recommends using the alt dol trick. I use CFG and see that it even has an alt dol line in options. But I have no clue how.

I searched forums before asking and came up dry. Just found a bunch of mentions without any explanations.

If somebody could explain this or link something I m issed in my haste I'd really appreciate it.

In all honesty this still don't tell me very much. Where do I get the .dol file it's speaking of? Where is it located? It's just telling me to rename, not telling me where it's at.

Is it on my WBFS drive or is it on the original disc? or what?

Extract the contents of wdms.zip to your SD:\usb-loader\ folder. The *.wdm files are Alt-Dol Disc Plus files.

Never done it before but here is my guess from searching...
    Convert wbfs to iso.
    Load the iso into wiiscrubber.
    Extract dol from partition directory.

That method is obsolete. It has been replaced by the Alt-Dol Disc Plus method. You use those *.wdm files in place of the *.dol files.

Didn't work for me. I'm using latest release of CFG (62) and after extracting your zip it never attemted to find them. Just told me that it failed to locate REDE4.dol and didn't attempt the RED.wdm that was in the zip.

I messed around with CFG a bit and found a player.dol file defaulted in it. Loaded it and it showed me the "wii motion plus" video and then did the same old screw up of sending me back to the system menu. After that one watch of the video I can now play the game normally without using any kind of alt dol.

Thanks for the effort, maybe CFG just dont' use wdm? I have no clue.

It does use them. Are you sure you extracted them to the right place? You should have:
    SD:\usb-loader\R3M.wdm
    SD:\usb-loader\R3X.wdm
    SD:\usb-loader\R3Y.wdm
    etc.

You can find instructions here if you need them for other games. Don't use the download link on that page though, since I gave you more up-to-date files.
Still, you only had to watch the movie once. Now WMP games will play fine.

I have no clue what you're talking about joostin. Those files aren't needed to select alt.dol from disc.
    Damn I suck!!!!

They are for Disc Plus. It was added to Cfg around rev 57 (or maybe 56?).
