    SD card not detected

    Hi,

First of all, let me thank you for taking the time to read this. Searching didn't yield interesting results so I hope you will be able to give some advice. I will try to give details without boring you too much.

I had a Wii on 4.2U, with the homebrew channel and I was able to play burnt discs. I don't exactly remember what I did because it was a while ago but everything was working fine. I had no external HD at the time so no backups and I used a SD card for wads and apps. Now comes Christmas time and my brother receives the new Donkey Kong game. Of course when he wanted to play he was prompted to update the Wii, which he did.

Now the HBC was gone, but I managed to put it back on (once again I did a nand backup and I installed bootmii as boot2). Everything starts working again. My brother wants to play Donkey Kong again and he is prompted to update the wii (again! I was still on 4.3). So he does, of course... it's not as long as the first time, the HBC is still there and nothing sees to have changed. I think I had blocked the updates from discs in one of the apps (priiloader?). So everything is fine, but I had a spare 640Gb drive and I wanted to play games on it because burnt discs were too slow (I wanted to back-up my 25 bought Wii games). So I do that, I followed a tutorial somewhere that seemed to work.

I encountered a problem though. The Wii's SD reader didn't seem to work anymore, all of a sudden. After some experimenting, I figured that the SD card isn't detected by the Wii when there is a "apps" folder on it or a wad file, so I can't use the HBC with my SD card. I created a fat partition on my HDD and now I can access homebrew apps from that, and the USB launchers work just fine.

Now my problem is: I can't install wads because of that. I tried a couple wad managers programs, all of them giving me a "-1" error which seems to be somewhat common on the forums. I tried changing my fat partition from primary to logical, didn't work.

So I'm asking for some advice here. Is there a way to fix the SD card reader? (I figured it was probably an anti-piracy feature that my brother had activated by updating the Wii). Or is there a way to install wads from the USB drive? (I want to install them on the Wii memory, of course, but from the USB instead of from the SD card).

My SD cards (I have two of them, both used to work) are those blue Sandisk 2GB cards, compatibility isn't the issue here.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

TL;DR: Updated to system 4,3U, SD card is only detected when there are no apps or wads on it, can't install wads from USB HDD, everything else works fine including usb backups. I want to install a wad to create a forwarder for WiiFlow or Launcher GX.

Can you use bootmii as boot2?

Btw, you could have just restored your NAND backup the first time your bro updated.

I did install bootmii as boot2 (and as ios, I did both), however bootmii needs to read stuff from my SD card which isn't detected when the bootmii stuff is on it. Also I read somewhere that bootmii won't work from USB. All I get is a black screen and a flashing blue drive.

And I guess I could have restored my very old nand backup but I would have lost many game saves that can't be transfered to SD cards. Also I didn't think it would become so bad. Thanks for trying!

Extract bootmii.zip to your SD card, and rename the appropriate bootmii.ini file (instructions are in the download). Put your SD card in your Wii, start it up, and see if bootmii flashes on the screen for a second. I don't really care if it can be launched from the HBC.

Btw, should you get everything working, I suggest you use Savegame Manager GX to backup all your save files. It will work on all of them, including ones that can't be copied through Data Management.

Nope, no bootmii. However I get weird lines on the side of the television since I softmodded my Wii for the second time.

Also I tried to get smashstacks to run (by following the 4.3 softmodding guide here), but nothing happens now. It doesn't load from the SD card.

Am I screwed? I can send a few dollars via paypal to whoever finds a solution.

Well that is interesting. Does this happen during bootup, or all the time? This really sounds like a hardware issue, and the timing is just a coincidence. I'm not saying you should give up though.

Btw, there is no need to offer bribes. We only allow threats on WiiHacks.

I would try to back up everything on the sd card to my PC, then reformat it and try again.

Only during boot. Before the "security" screen comes up. I thought it was because I had installed bootmii as boot 2 (and bootmii used to come up instead of the wii menu but I changed the folder name to avoid this. I can't get it to boot from that now though, as you know).

And to be honest I have no clue what to try next, hence the "bribe". Threats don't usually work so well on forums.

    It's probably useless, but here's a picture I took:

That happens on my TV, right before the bootmii screen comes up.

If you mean formating the SD card, I tried multiple times with 2 different cards. If you mean formating the Wii, I'm not sure I like the idea.

Problem is, bootmii screen doesn't come up. In fact the SD card icon on the Wii menu isn't even lit up (it's grayed out). It does work when there isn't anything related to softmodding on my SD card though.

You seem to be as stumped as I am. So I guess this is it uh? Well... thanks a lot for your support!
