Brand spanking new, got some questions

    Hi everyone,

Been a classic Nintendo man since the NES. However totally skipped the Wii since I am a bit older now and was a WoW addict for quite a while.

Now my kid has got a Wii from his uncle and I want to give him the best experience.

The thing has system 4.3E (It's Pal but I guess that's what the 'E' is for) and it's is supposedly chipped. I can tell cause it plays some back-up games from dvd. It hasn't got any softmods, there are no such channels. Some dvd's however don't play like the one I made last night (a scrubbed Pal iso which was working for all the other people) and some old ones he got.

I have been reading extensively yesterday and I get the whole 'softmod' picture. I am about to get my hands on a Indiana Jones or Yu-Gi-Oh to start working on it.

But some questions keep puzzling me so the best way would be to kindly ask you guys to help me out!

1] Just to make sure: It is possible to put the whole Homebrew thing on a chipped Wii?
2] I keep reading that since 4.2 the region on chipped Wii's is limited again to your own region. How is this when the Wii is softmodded, will it be region free?
3] What are those 'scrubbed' isos I keep coming across?
4] Is it possible to attach a bus-powered USB-HD to the Wii once the usb-loader is in place?
5] To make sure; does connect24 actually update any software on the Wii (did it in the past, I mean automatically)?
6] By disable-ling connect24 can we still play over the net with friends?
7] As I understand it future games could install software by putting it in the Wii. Is there a good Homebrew app which prevents system-updates commenced by games?
8] Are we gonna miss out standard stuff once the Wii is softmodded, like using the regular channels, playing online with and against friends, can we still spend Nintendo-points on classics and so on?

    About the Wii itself:

1] Should I be able use the wireless Gamecube pads? didn't get them to work yesterday...
2] If I just plug in/buy a gamepad (hey I am old-school, I can't race holding my hands in the air, I steer best with a d-pad or stick) can I race/fight/puzzle with my thumbs again?

When I get my hands on a tri-head screwdriver I am gonna open it up and see which chip it has but I think it won't matter since I play on softmodding it anyway.

Thanks is advance for your time reading this and your answers. I hope I can make a contribution here some day soon. But for now I only have the little machine for less than 24h

    Introduce Yourself

Start there, the mods will give you a bunch of information to answer all of your questions. I would suggest taking a good look at the rules as well.

    1) Yes.
    2) I'm no expert on mod chips but I would imaging if you launch via one of the softmod methods like a USB loader or NeoGamma you can still play out of region games.
    3) They've had the update partition and filler removed.
    4) Yes or no depending on if the drive is compatible or not.
    5) No WiiConnect24 will not automatically update you. You still need to accept the update.
    6) Yes.
    7) Priiloader.
    8) Yes you can still go online and use the official Nintendo channels with a softmodded Wii.

    Part 2:
    1) That would depend on it the game supports GC controllers. As long as the game will use a GC controller then the wireless ones should work.
    2) It's all dependent on the game. The developers choose the supported controllers.

Sure if that's the way to go..

I read the rules after reading 100s of post and I was under the impression the introduction section was not for asking questions. And the newbie section seemed appropriate enough.

Going through lots of texts and using the search-option to try and get clear answers I just didn't find it all so I summed up what was left to know hoping for a helping hand.

You were correct in that assumption.New users are asked to make an introduction post in that forum though. The mods give you a nice welcome message full of great links that will help you.
3] What are those 'scrubbed' isos I keep coming across?
This is why I pointed you to the rules. Where could you be "coming across" any isos?

I think Darkside answered your questions. Most of them (IMO) seemed like they were pretty easy to find the answers to. Spoonfeeding seems to cripple the new users and lead to multiple questions that have been answered many times. The more research you do on your own, the more you will understand everything. You will be much more comfortable modding your wii and making adjustments that way. Consider it a little bit of "tough love", not me being a jerk.

    Thanks a lot, major help.

Hey, I am thankfull people reply to me, some other forums I frequented were not always that great. You are by no means a jerk, people like you keep places like this in perspective and alive, I moderated enough forums to know.

I know the questions seem straightforward but when you been reading a lot (of new stuff) the opinions and advices contradict and make the outcome more misty than clearer sometimes. That is also why it is great (and a small gamble I guess) to be able to ask a question in the words that make me understand. Just have to trust that people give a correct answer, but this place gives me faith.

The rules can sometimes be thin ice when there is software copying involved, words are easily misunderstood. I just found out yesterday about this whole software modding and still have to find the boundaries in that field. So forgive me if I cross a line and feel free to point me right.

These scrubbed items I came across are all over the net, well by name and address, and I understood it was some kind of 'slimmed-down' version of data. The question was why altering was needed but Darkcide's answer made it more clear.

I got all I have been reading sink in in the meantime as well which helps ^^

Made the introduction and got the info reply, thanks. Did got all that great info before but I'll go through it again anyway.

    Cheers.
