Looking into buying a wii and have a few questions about modding

So have a few questions about modding my first wii I will be buying. I was planning on buying the newest red wii but have read that it cant be modded to play backup games and such. How true is this statement and what can and cannot be done with the red one mod wise? Should I look into buying a different model that is more easily modded like a black one or any model in particular? Thanks for all the help im not new to the modding scene did it with my xbox and many other devices just new to the wii

It can be modded to play backups but only from USB or SD...No disc backups.

The red, black, and any newer white wiis contain a D3-2 drive, which are unable to play backups via disc.. only usb. If you want an older wii, you could look on eBay, Craigslist, etc, but theres no way of knowing which drive it has unless the seller tells you the serial number. I have a newer white wii & I'm fine with playing backups via usb.

older wii's (prior to late 08) can have bootmii installed as boot2. That is THE BEST brick protection out there. Newer wii's, cannot have that done. Then, in late 09, N started releasing new drives that cannot read burnt games nor dvds. So the new wii's are stuck with usb loading (which loads games faster anyways)
All wii's can play movies music etc through usb or sd.

You may find a Black Wii that has system menu 4.2, which can be softmodded with bannerbomb. The first release of the black Wii had Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort included, but no guarantees that it will have 4.2.

are there any downsides to only playing via usb? I have tons of huge USB drives (perks of working for a huge corporation in the IT dept) the only thing i could see would be multiple drives for lots of games??

thanks all for your help thus far I really do appreciate it greatly

Well, the best "free" way to mod it is via softmodding. You should follow this Softmod ANY Wii mod:

If you don't want to do that and just want a "plug & play" solution, you should research Wode (AKA Wodejukebox).
