Ca Please point a newb in the right direction

I have been reading and reading but i'm just not sure where to start...

My wii disk drive is getting very noisy and i fear its close to death. i've been doing some research and came across wiiflow which looks totally awesome... but i feel like i'm drowning in info... can anyone point me in the right direction?

    my current setup:

-have a launch wii, hard-modded with a cyclowiz (yes i know its ancient but i'm able to play all current releases)
-I seem to recall updating the ios around the time that new super mario came out but can't recall exactly what i did.. in any case i guess i did something right because i haven't updated since then and i can still play it along with all current releases (kirby epic yarn, epic mickey etc)
    -i am on version 4.3U
-i have a spare 750gb 3.5 drive around... i'd like to buy a usb enclosure and backup my discs...
-everything i read seems to be tutorials on how to softmod then install the hard drive... but since i'm already 'hard' modded with a chip, i assume i don't need the soft mod?
-i already have the homebrew channel installed but its probably very old...
-i love the idea of launching wiiflow right from the home screen ie not going to homebrew channel each time... i think they call this 'forwarder channel'
-i'm not interested in any online play (if that matters)

If anyone can have a bit of patience for a semi-newb and can steer me toward a tut that will work with a modchip i'd be very grateful

    cheers!

If you want to utilize the HD, you'll need to softmod your Wii. The cIOS (Customized IOS) will enable USB HD capability. Of course, you'll need a compatible interface/controller (or in plain-speak, drive enclosure lol). You've updated since NSMB (whether IOS or System Menu; that title would put you @ 4.1) --- you mention having 4.3 System Menu (perhaps an online update). HBC installed in and by itself doesn't mean you're softmodded.

ok thanks for the fast response... thanks for clarifying that i need to soft mod in order to get HD enabled... another stupid question- I assume by your response that i can just follow the soft mod tutorials even though the modchip is in there? i don't have to remove it (i hope)?

To softmod a 4.3 Wii, you'd normally be required to possess, own, or have at hand one of four original/retail disks. I do believe you can circumvent that requirement with regard to a backup of any of those four via your hardmod (fortunately for you). Did you just install HBC or was this Wii fully softmodded? I suspect the former.

I am pretty sure I just installed Hbc...but then when I got nsmb working I remember doing quite a bit of stuff so I wonder if I softmodded at that time?

Super newb time- is there a way I can tell if it's softmodded?

hbc should be installed, maybe some custom channels. Depends on what was installed.
you can run a syscheck to see what ios's are installed (link in my signature)
See the Thanks button over there?

I def have hbc as well as some other channels however because I have a mod chip I cant be sure if I'm softmodded or whether hbc was just installed as a wad or something...I seem to recall having to install special ios to play new super Mario bros

In order to install ios's does the wii have to be softmodded?
