No regular SD, only SDHC, for 3.4U, what do you recommend I do?

I softmodded my own Wii a long while back, and offered to do the same for my sister today, and went out and bought the cheapest SD card I saw to do so, which was a $10 4 gig deal. It wasn't until I got home and tried to bannerbomb that I remembered that SDHC would not work in this case. Is there any way around this before the console is modded, or am I kind of boned in that regard? Also, would you guys recommend I go out and rent a 4.0-4.2 IOS game in order to just update up, or just buy another SD? Is there a downside to updating up to 4.2 before softmodding?

Also, the SD inside my own Wii is a 16 gig SDHC... I do believe I had a 2 gig one at one point in order to softmod that one, but I lost it ages ago. (Just in case someone thinks I overlooked this line of inquiry.)

Won't make a difference if you update to 4.0 +...BB still won't work with an SDHC card and neither will bootmii. Go return that card and buy a 2GB SD card. Sandisk is best.
    Damn I suck!!!!

Where are you guys getting that Bannerbomb doesn't work with SDHC cards? According to it's creator Comex it does if you are on menu 4.0 or above. It says so right on its WiiBrew page. BootMii will also work with SDHC cards...The card I regularly use for backing up my NAND is an SDHC...And a micro one at that. Once again it's right on its WiiBrew page.

I have never been able to get BB or BM to work with an SDHC card....nor was I able to use apps like MMM with and SDHC card....point is if he is buying a card....get a sandisc 2GB SD...NOT an SDHC card which will give him problems.

Also, micro SD.....full SD it does not matter. Only if the card is SDHC does it matter. Maybe you got it to work with one card but it doesn't work with most I have tried.

Please don't think I was trying to flame you and I understand a general recommendation for greatest compatibility. It's just what you said was completely untrue. It holds true for the cards you have tried thus far and I'm sure it holds true for many others but to say they completely don't work is just wrong. We all know how buggy the Wii and Homebrew can be about card choice. I sorry but I get a little worried when I see posts like that because of the scenario that made me leave the auto forum worlds. A long standing, knowledgeable, helpful, respected, valued member of a community (staff or not) such as yourself will make a comment like that completely isn't true. Noob A reading the board takes it as the word of god himself even if it is untrue based solely on the members standing. Then Noob A decides that he wants to enter the community one day and be helpful mostly from info gathered while reading the board and starts repeating what they have read. Noob A now starts repeating bad/wrong info that was given by someone at some point and when confronted with solid proof against what they are spreading they are still right because they read it on the board or a highly regarded member said so at some point. Sorry for the OT rant.

First of all I don't base things off compatibility lists...I give info based on my experience when I can....and in my experience (personally and reading many many posts from our members having problems with SDHC cards) no SDHC cards have worked properly for the entire modding experience (most often failing with BB BM and TBR). What I said is not completely untrue nor is it completley true. The point is he bought the wrong card for modding the wii, better to return it now and get the proper card rather then rent/buy a game to update to 4.1 then find out his card doesn't work.

So you can call it bad/wrong info if you like....I think of it the other way around. Whatever is going to work best for the person attempting it is good/right info.

Thanks for understanding I wasn't trying to start a flame war and just stating my opinion. I cant argue the logic of the above post. As stated I kind of get uncomfortable when I see a post said with such conviction thats not entirely true coming from a member of the community as valuable and respected as yourself because of my own reasons also stated above. As you said it's all lies in whatever works for the person and however they choose. IMO options should remain open if they are a viable reasonable choice unless there is a definitive answer...Which there really isn't in this case. Wii modding would be boring if we all did the same things and followed the same guides.

Agreed, I should have elaborated on my first comment and made it known why I suggested that/said it won't work.

If you have an SDHC card that works, then by all means use it. In this situation returning the SDHC card for an SD card that is known to work is what I would do as I have never had success with SDHC cards.
