    Question Troubleshooting Disk Read Error

My son's Wii is giving him disk read errors. i bought a laser cleaner and still no joy.

My question, then, is how do i determine if only my laser needs replacing or the entire drive?

Yes, but it only tells me that if i am getting a "Unable to Read the Disk" error that i should send my system to them, and since it's been soft-modded, i'm not sure that's a great idea

I'd personally recommend you to go with USB loading, as it works much better and faster than discs. But who am I? I don't know what you could do from here, except for considering to go with USB loading.

''But how can I get games on the harddrive if the DVD-drive is broken?''
There are special DVD-drives for the PC which allow you to dump a Wii-disc in the form of an ISO. Perhaps you could bring a visit to a friend/family member, and rip your games to your harddrive using his/her Wii.

    Thanks, Bandicoot!

i had the Wii modded, and i was running games from a USB stick, but my niece came over and messed with some settings and now i'm on 4.3u and my Homebrew Channel is gone. Shortly after that, my drive went out.

Is there a way to re-do the hack without the drive working?

That's not good. You need to be able to run an original disc to mod 4.3. Were you lucky enough to have bootmii as boot2 or a forwarder channel that is still installed? If so, there is hope for you.

Here are the "extra" channels still installed:
    Wii Backup Launcher
    SD USB Loader
    GC Backup Launcher
    CoverFloader
    Backup Loader w/ 002 Fix (Gamma 0.3)
    Internet Channel

As long as one of them is a forwarder channel, you have a way in! Look at the softmod any wii link in my signature, scroll down to the "other desperate options" spoiler tab and click it. Good luck!

If your not in a big hurry then you could fix the problem yourself. It may be the lens, maybe the ribbon cable, maybe a bad motherboard on the drive, etc.. Most likely it,s one of the first 2. You can get the lens and cable from eBay pretty cheap and try and fix it yourself or you could just get an entire drive from eBay and make it an easy fix.

edit: and you guys are forgetting the fact that without a working drive he has no way of backing up his games.
