    does anyone know the serial number cutoff for wii's playing burnt dvds?

    I've been googling it and can't find anything

    I'm going to buy a used one from gamestop and softmod it for my gf...I did the softmod 4.2 tutorial by messie and I love it...I just want to make sure I buy a wii that is capable of reading the dvds

    I think the D3-2 drive was released late '09
    so maybe if you find out how old the wii is...

    if you can, get one that can have bootmii installed as boot2
    to my knowledge, those for sure can read burnt discs

    Wii Drive Chip Database - Serial Number Estimation
    i found that link in Stomp_442's signature it is supposed to tell you what drive you have in your wii... all you need is the Serial number... so if you buy that wii you can check your serial with it.
    if you have a "D3-2" drive in your will then it can't read backup disc

    If your Wii came with 4.0 onwards, then it won't play DVD-R's
