Question Tried to rip scratched disc, now game locks up :(

I tried to rip NSMB onto my external HDD using USB loader GX, and it got to 7% and said it was done (which has never happened before). I thought it might be an issue with NSMB, but I noticed 3 huge rings scratches around the edge of the disc, so I'm assuming that's what did it.

Now every time I try to click NSMB it just stays pushed down. Nothing else happens. It doesn't 100% lock up, because I can still move the cursor. However, once I click NSMB, I can't click anything else in USB loader GX and I have to hard reset the wii.

How do I delete the NSMB image? WiiXplorer won't recognize my USB HDD and neither will WBFS manager for some reason.

Have 6 or 7 games on the ext HDD so far, all have worked flawlessly until now. Any help for a super homebrew nub would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Also, I'm not sure if the scratches were there before or after the attempted rip. Never had any scratch issues before, so I'm assuming they didn't just happen.

It sounds like the HDD might be corrupted. What cIOS did you use to rip the game?

Not sure, how would I find out? I used this tutorial for everything (before I found this site), so whatever it says is what I have. How to Back Up and Play Your Wii Games from an External Hard Drive

It looks like you used 249rev17. I suggest you resoftmod your Wii with mauifrog's guide, then setup your drive using Krank's guide.

Is there any way around that? It's a miracle I didn't brick the thing the first time (I'm not hack-savvy) and I'd hate to chance it again and lose all my progress.

Really, everything has worked 100% fine up until NSMB started messing up. I've even backed up 2 games since then, which both work fine...there must be another way!

I think really what I need to know is how to get the botched NSMB image off of my ext HDD. It just sits there in USB Loader GX and locks up when I click it. WBFS manager doesn't appear to be recognizing my HDD either...

Try Wii backup manager insted of wbfs manager. If that still doesnt work, I would reformat the hard drive to fat32 and install the appropriate cios to read the games from fat32. Fat32 has many advantages over wbfs and wbfs seems to have a lot of issues like the one you are having. Goodluck

WiiBackupManager doesn't work either - can't recognize the drive. Why can the Wii use the drive but none of these programs can? I guess I'll just do the FAT32 thing.

    Which cios do I need for FAT32? I guess I have 249 rev17 now, running on 3.3U.

Can I just reformat the ext HDD to FAT32 (following Krank's guide) and continue to run USB Loader GX without having to completely resoftmod my Wii?

For FAT32 loading with GX you need a revision beyond r931 (older revisions don't support FAT loading)

Everything you just said is like a foreign language to me
Can I accomplish that without having to resoftmod my entire Wii?
