I posted the details of my kids' Wii in the thread title. The question will come in a moment, just before I set the scene.

My young children have managed to scratch Mario Kart (MKW) so it won't play.

Nintendo are not willing to exchange it, even for a nominal sum to cover their costs. They are willing to sell me another one though, but for more than I can buy it from Amazon. Cheeky!

So this is my other option - mod the Wii.

So the question then is this:

Given the details in the thread title, and given I don't possess a soldering iron nor the experience to use one in anger, could anyone point me in the right direction please?

I plan to make a backup copy of MKW by burning a downloaded ISO to a DVD-R. (This is right, yes?)

Ideally, the solution will cost less than the £28 Nintendo want to charge me for a 'backup'.

I would suggest you post an intro in the intro section and a mod will greet you with all of the info and guides that you should need.

Hmm, I had a read of the stuff that was posted in the welcome thread.

I am fairly technical but a lot of the stuff in the guides baffled me.

Can anyone offer me advice on how to proceed? My machine details are in the subject line.

PS apologies - I also posted this in the newbie section but don't seem to be getting many replies, so I thought this might be a better place for it.

Find the guide that applies to you. System Menu 4.3? Mauifrog's guide. System Menu 4.2? Shadow Sonic's or mauifrog's ANY Wii softmod guide. System Menu 3.1-4.1? Dogegg's guide or mauifrog's ANY Wii guide. If you need help along the way, post your question in whichever guide you select.

Hit the edit button instead of double posting - Have a look at the mod any wii guide by mauifrog - You should have been provided with the link in the welcome post..... Just read the mod over 10 times if you have to, until you are confident to proceed. Any questions regarding the guide should be posted in the guide.

Thanks for the reply nightstah. I guess the first question is:

Do I want to buy a chip for it (solderless of course) or do I want to soft mod it?

I am thinking of buying a chip - it looks easier and all I want to do is to be able to play backed-up games. Would you agree this is probably my best course of action?

If you'd otherwise feel overwhelmed, yes. Keep in mind a fair amount of the modchips need soldered, and some don't. Obviously in such a case, figure you'd want a solderless one :)

Can do a soldered or solderless install and is completely updateable via DVD - this was extremely important with the BCA issue with new mario bros, the drivekeys needed replacing with a new version.

Only different soldered vs solderless is the read speed is limited to 3x with solderless - nothing you will really notice.
