hbc cant load apps off usb hdd?

i've hijacked a few threads and done a ton of searching and figured my issue warrants its own topic

basically this is my first wii hack (hello btw) and worked through a few earlier issues but i've seem to hit a road block

i cant seem to get hbc to load any apps off my hdd instead of my sd card. my harddrive works fine (used gen3sf's guide) and the hdd is on the compatibility list.

my harddrive is fat32 formatted with a primary partitioned. the file structure is identical to that of my sd cards. the hard drive works i've backed up a few of my wii games already. i can even launch the apps off my hdd using loadmii. but for some reason hbc wont look to load off the usb (yes the sd card is not installed when i try)

i've reinstalled hbc and bootmii, i've tried to run a usb stick formatted fat32 and files matching the same structure as my sd card and still wont work.

i really want to get some emulators running and for some reason i find running off my sd card is choppy. if there is another menu like app (forwards i guess you call them, sorry im still new) that i can run besides hbc that will allow me to easily load my apps i would consider that.

some other relavant info, my will was a 4.3u i used the smash bro hack and did opt to downgrade to a 4.1 which might have been a mistake, is there a way i can safely go back to 4.3 but remain hacked and not bricked...lol (i do have priiloader installed and blocking updates)

i choose to hack my wii myself as i really don't trust anyone advertising on craigslist to do it right or do a proper through job of it and this forum has been great getting me this far

    anyways i'd appreciate any help

Did you change the source to USB by pressing 1 when in the HBC?

Hey, no need to be embarrassed. It's not something that you expect to be there. It would be nice if you didn't have to switch.

In case you didn't know, 2 switches between display modes, and to scroll through descriptions quickly, hold down B while pointing at the description, and point the Wii Remote up or down.
