It's because we don't know what part of the update failed. A System Menu update through Nintendo doesn't just install the SM. IOS's (including stubs), MIOS, channels, boot2 (if you had an older version), and more are installed. When your update failed, any one of those things could have been corrupted. We know it is the install and not the download, since you used a disc. It isn't boot2 or IOS80, since you can access System Menu.

A system check might explain what went wrong, so it is important that you get one of those games. Nintendo won't help you since you have had homebrew installed in the past, even though you removed it.

What do you mean I used a disc? I was updating via Wifi.... I can still do everything on the wii except view the shop channel. I was playing 007 online today and I can still use the internet channel.

Heres something kind of unrelated. Since I deleted the softmod channels, now I just have blank spaces where those channels used to be and its making my wii menu look all jacked up because my channels are in random places and using 3 pages when it should all be on 1.5 pages. How do I rearrange my channels on the main menu?

grab the channel by holding A+B and drag it to where you want it.

A failed update can brick your Wii.

    • Any failed update on three of those pieces (boot2, system menu, IOS) will cause the system to irreparably brick.
    • Any failed update on another part of the system (for example, another IOS) could either cause strange behavior (certain games won’t launch) or could cause the system to brick (if it damaged the filesystem in NAND).

Well, my wii does not seem to be bricked since I have no limitations other than the shop channel. What does it do when it is bricked? Will the wii just not turn on or something?

Go here for info on bricks. You obviously haven't bricked, but something is wrong, since you can't do an update and your Shopping Channel doesn't work.

Most commonly manifested symptom: upon power on, black screen. Other bricks like #003 error give an "unauthorized device" permanent brick (Korean Wiis region-changed to US and SM 4.2 or 4.3; 4.1 is OK).

Semi-bricks are another matter (corrupted messages and the like).
