Noob with semi-bricked Wii, help needed!

My brother messed with our Wii, I can't access the Wii settings, and he's across the country. I don't know much about hacking, so I decided to google the error message, and I found out it was semi-bricked (I think, I'm not completely sure since I just learned about this....). When I was searching, I found out that I could fix it by playing a first party (recent/new?) game, but my Wii won't let me load the disc until I update it, which keeps on failing, probably due to not having an internet connection. I can't play Super Mario Galaxy 2 anymore because of this, as well as the Kirby: Epic Yarn that my younger brother bought today. Help please?

More details please, like what System Menu do you have, what is the error message, and has your Wii been hacked?

The message reads "Wii system update has failed." I don't know how to prevent that from coming up when I put in the new disk. And yes, the Wii was hacked by my older brother.

I followed that guide, and found that one problem I had was that the System Menu was set to Japan, not North America. After fixing that, I am now able to access the Wii Settings, but the same error appears when I put in the new game.

Description of error: The prompt, "In order to use this software, you must preform a Wii system update. Select OK to begin update." appears. After clicking okay, I click "I accept" (the only option) to the prompt, "IMPORTANT: If your Wii console includes unauthorized modifications, this update may detect and remove unauthorized content causing immediate or delayed inoperability of your console. Failure to accept this update may also render this and future games unplayable. If you do not with to accept this update, you can hold down the POWER button for 4 seconds." After attempting to load the update, the message "The Wii update failed" appears and I am taken to the home menu.

Are any of your games from Japan, and can you still access the System Settings after the failed update?
