Getting Wii to play DVDs...pretend I'm your Granny.

I've just ordered a Wii partly on the mistaken assumption that I would be able to play DVDs on it.

    FAIL.

I only really want the raptor thing for watching the occasional film or programme on iplayer, but I think my kids will enjoy the games so I'm loathe to send it back. My little brother tells me that there is probably a "crack" that would enable the Wii to play DVDs. WTF is a crack?

I'm guessing that this topic has been covered in detail elsewhere on the forum, but I'm terminally dim that I can't actually find it.

Can anyone give me link? Or even just a basic yes or no as to whether this is a sortable outable problem?

Not all Wii's can play DVD's. If your Wii has a D3-2 drive chip you can't play DVDs or backup discs.

    OK...thanks!

And how can I tell what sort of drive chip it has?

Ah...that'll be on the DC database! <<cringe>>

I guess I'll have to wait until it's delivered?

Type your Wii's serial number (it's on the bottom) into the search box on this site and it will estimate the chip you have.

If you are ordering a new wii, you are most likely NOT going to play dvd's, if it's used you can keep hope alive until it arrives.

I think they want it for DVDS vs ripped DVDs.
The problem is the wii doesn't make a good DVD player, it's better to buy a cheap $20-$30 player (they have hdmi and progression at that price these days) and wear that out vs wearing the wii laser out.
