New *Black* Wii Question/Concern

Hi Everyone!

I've not yet purchased a wii, I will be doing that within a couple of weeks, but I want to do my research and make sure I've got everything down before I try attempthing this lol. My greatest fear is bricking the system and being out all that money (especially since I've been saving for almost a year and a half to be able to afford it).

I've heard so much conflicting information, so I figured I'd come out here to try and get some straight answers from some experts lol. My husband wants the black wii, he's actually insistant on it. From everything I've heard, they're more difficult to softmod, and easier to brick. I was told by a friend of mine (who used to mod wiis, but hasn't touched one in about a year) that the black ones are pretty much impossible to mod, and that if you can get it modded that you're not able to run an external drive for your games because of new security features, and that if you burn discs, there are many different games that will immediately brick your wii on start-up.

Someone please help! Like I said, I can't afford to brick the system when I buy it because I can't afford to buy another one. I'm in a small rural area, and for me to go to buy a used one (with an older system menu) I'd have to drive almost 2 hours. If anyone out there has any experience with softmodding these new systems, please let me know. I want to make sure I have everything in place before I buy anything and end up possibly wasting money and time.

in short your mate is wrong you can mod any and all wii but the black wii will not play any back up games on disc you will need to use a hardrive

Is there a specific hard drive I should be buying?

I have a black Wii myself, and I had no trouble modding it at all. It went pretty much perfect, just like a white Wii I've modded once before for a friend.
All Wii's can play back-ups from an external harddrive, but the newer Wii models can't play back-ups from a DVD-R disc, because the newest DVD-Drives physically can't read these.

Newer games can brick a Wii in a few ways, but Priiloader can block disc and online updates, so there is no need to worry about that.
Just follow one of the softmod guides here on WiiHacks, and you will safely mod your Wii.

Most harddrives work fine. Here is a list of USB harddrives that are confirmed to work with the Wii.

Games do not brick your Wii unless you have done something stupid. i.e. stubbing IOS's that the game wanted to install etc.

They do however remove your softmodding if done without caution.

Games can brick your Wii: think about a region-changed Korean Wii, and a semi-brick.

Referer to my previous post, games bricking your wii depends on YOU doing something to the wii first.

or doing something stupid - updating from out of region game. all user error.

Yes, it is user error, but then say ''because of user error'', instead of ''because of something stupid''.
It's not that stupid if you brick your Wii...

No, I'll stick with something stupid.

Updating from an out of region disk is doing something stupid, which ever way you cut it and doesn't result in a full brick.

Updating a region change Korean wii is very much a stupid thing to do.

The whole 'games can brick your wii' is wrong, especially in the context of this thread (Which is White wii vs black wii) as there's no difference.

Look, if some girl/guy modded a Wii for some girl/guy, and has not told him/her what not to do, it is not something stupid.
It can also be that someone has followed a guide that is not on WiiHacks, which doesn't warn for such things. I would not call it stupid if you follow a guide that is not on WiiHacks...
I've seen enough guides on the internet that don't warn for such things.

It doesn't result in a full brick, but it results in a semi brick. A semi brick is also a brick, so it can brick your Wii.

That games can brick your Wii is not untrue: in some cases they can, no matter what sort of brick it is. The question was if it is possbile, to which the simple answer is 'yes'.
User error or not, games can brick your Wii.
