Question Specific walkthrough guide to softmodding please?

Hi all, firstly, I love this forum, it's active and filled with friendly and helpful users, and I feel safe asking you guys already, but basically I'm nervous about this soft modding business...

I once had a Wii back in the days of yore, but since moving out of my mum's 3 years ago (and having no contact in about 2 years), I knew making bakups of my games was a good idea. Well, after 2 years of student living (read: poverty), I've finally saved up to get a reasonable second hand Wii in my local cash convertors. I knew some modding would need to be done, and having read things about both mod chips and soft mods, would I be right in thinking that soft mod IS the way to go? right?

Well anyway, I can't exactly afford to replace my new Wii so I need step by step simple instructions. I've read many tutorials on this site and other sites, but even here it seems that I need to bounce back and forth between pages for each steps like, "if you recieve this problem, follow another entire tutorial here [link], and then come back and continue here."
Which is daunting. I feel I may make a mistake and etc. I've read so much of the stuff though that I think I understand all the terminology, and I know not to delete any IOS under 200 so where do I start?

Possibly important points; I have a black Wii, I have no idea what system menu version I am on or how to find out, I dont currently have an SD card (though will rush out to get one once someone convinces me I am in safe hands), and I don't have a GameCube controller (do I need one?)

I'd like someone of experience to be kind enough to help me with EXACTLY what to download and from where, and then exactly what to do with it, no ambiguities or copy paste jobs (or clean it up if it is a copy and paste job). I want a guide specific to ME. Remember, I only want to play backups, I may look into the dev scene at a later date to see what homebrewers are coming up with but for now, I have a whole bunch of unplayable classics sat next to my Wii, crying to be played through (i had about 80% saves on all of them, shame to start again but hey, mario galaxy is 53XX0RZ and I cannot WAIT to get onto number two, but not until numer one is complete )

I have no problems understanding the information on here, there just seems to be a lot of variation, and like I said before, I'm [Removed] pretty terrified of [seriously?] this up.

Thanks in advance for the help, very muchly

    Willium

they're different guides for different system menu versions
to check your menu version, go into settings, then wii settings, and in the upper right of the screen will be 4.x then a letter or 3.x then a letter

make sure you go over and post an intro in the introductions forum, you'll get links to the guides for modding your wii
See the Thanks button over there?

Black Wii = D3-2 or D4 drive. In other words, to play backups you will have to go USB HD. No backup will run via the optical drive, nor would they install to USB HD. You'd have to use originals, or perhaps (if not D4 drive) do a PCB board swapout in order to use it (optical drive).

Any of the guides on this site that are for your system menu will get the job done. Wiihacks.com won't let a bad guide stay up. Like Nightstah said though, Black wii has the new chip in it so you will have to have a usb hd and original discs to copy. Happy Modding!

apologies for language I didn't think it was even THAT bad, it was for effect but iif you guys take it that seriously then fair enough (why would little kids be modding their Wiis anyway hmm? )

@us3rname: so it does, I was looking for a menu option with console details or some such but it was there all along. Ver. 4.3E apparently, is that good?

@nightstah & skellinator: okay thanks, could you point me to the one best suited for me? one that covers everything, from start to finish, including protecting from bricks and preferably a reversal process just to be on the safe side. My understanding is that you just uninstall any apps like homebrew and remove ISOs above 200, but just need clarification, and also on the boot menu as it's likely different to other boot menus i've seen, namely pc. Also, you say usb hd, is a usb stick included in that or does it really have to be a hard drive? Also, no hardware modding for me, too much to lose, I have my backups on dvd-r AND saved to my pc for copying to whatever I need to play them from.

sorry for all the questions but i can't afford to leave anything to chance or random guessing or getting ahead of myself, even though I'm itching to get back into the 2D3D world of paper mario again

    thanks once more

    Make your wii a virgin
    4.3 softmod guide

Those 2 links should take care of you, assuming you have 4.3 menu. Some usb sticks work but you will want a lot more space than that. Brick prevention is limited without being able to install bootmii as boot2, you will have to install as ios most likely. priiloader is a must! Dont stress yourself out too much, these guys know their stuff, you will be OK just follow the instructions! There are a couple links in my sig that may help you if you get stuck.

I admit that I did not read this entire post but there is never a reason to make your Wii a virgin just to resoftmod. It is not worth the risk of bricking.

I agree with you! I just figured I would give him what he asked for. If he has browsed ANY of the forums he should know that the whole "virgin" thing is a bad idea.

Especially with the guide you linked, lol. There is a big warning in the guide that warns against using it on a 4.2 Wii. The same waring applies to 4.3 Wii's.

    Requirements:
300 free blocks wii memory- found in data management
    Indiana Jones Original Adventures(ntsc-u/pal) -4.3u/e
    or
    Super Smash Bros Brawl(ntsc-u/j) -4.3u/j
    or
    Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's -4.3u/e/j
Is there some other way? NO
    Can I bannerbomb? NO
    Please? NO
like I said, I only have backups, not originals (bar wii sports and resort as they were thrown in with my wii), is glitching through hacked indiana jones savegame the only way on 4.3E black wii? and also, by virgin, do you simply mean unmodified? because other than the official update, she's clean as a whistle lol. but yeah, any avoidance of bricking my console is pretty important, how good is priiloader in comparison to boot2 thingy, what are the differences and will I be safe with just the one?
    thanks
    WBC

edit: oh and what is a nand backup exactly and (assuming it's what i think it is), how can it be restored in an emergency? cheers =]
