Please correct me if I am wrong, but all official "Classic Controllers" plug into the Wii remote. Anything that plugs into the gamecube port would be classified as a "Gamecube controller" for compatibility purposes. From the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom wiki...
The game has five control options, which include the Classic Controller, Nintendo GameCube controller, third-party arcade sticks and the two more simplified control schemes of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk and solely the Wii remote.
Maybe the reason it does not work with other games is that they are not Gamecube controller compatable, as not all games are. Perhaps this is your issue.

Ok, here is a second opinion, since his was the first one I guess. I think the same thing as he does.

I would assume that you would still be able to use your controller on any game that supports Gamecube pad support, but the Virtual Console does not support it. I was lucky to receive my classic controller as a gift with my wii 4 years ago (with 3 wii remotes and a nunchuk) so I have never had to worry about it, but if it is an issue, that $20 might need to be an investment worth making.

Where are you getting this from? I think just about every VC title allows you to use a GC controller and I can confirm that.

Apologies, I don't have any Gamecube Controllers anymore, and more VC games say "You will need the classic controller" before them, so I assumed. Officially retracted. >.<

It's all good. Wiiware is kind of hit or miss like disk games though.

I bought a controller that was labeled as a classic controller, but was indeed a wireless GC controller. I knew it was a GC controller before I bought it, but the packaging would lead the buyer to think it is a classic controller.
