Newbie goes Wii, tips are welcomed for hacking!

Hey guys, how are ya'll? Ill just give a small presentation instead of posting a thread in that section. Im a swedish guy with a thing for Nintendo. Rented a N64 when I was a kid and played Super smash bros the minute it released. Seriously I even watched trailers and game stores with a N64 glassed and showing a preview of the game.

Got my first N64 later and was happy as hell =) Sold it a bunch of years later (something I regret so darn bad) and got instressted in the other Nintendo consoles, sadly I didnt buy one and here I am sick loads of years later having thought of buying a Wiiiiiiiii.

I was watching some Youtube clipps of ppl battling eachother on Brawl using Wii and some internetz and it looked to fun that I wanted to get myself a console.

But the thing is, the Wii only intresst me if I can chip/hack/mod it so that I can play backup games online. I started browsing the forum and I just got lost in the diffrent ways of modifying the console. The thing that intressted me the most was the Softmod and that's why I am creating the thread mostly. To see what you guys can say about it and tell me how hard it is to get. The other thing that I discovered was WiiKey, I believe this is some sort of chip you put in the Wii to have sort of the same effect.

So I have some questions for you guys about those method (mostly Softmod) and it would mean ALOT to me if you could answer them.

NOTE: I have not bought a Wii yet.

You can copy and paste the sheet below for easy answering.

    1. Softmod, is this hard to do as a average PC user? [Answer: ]
    2. Softmod, is it risky? I was thinking about accedently downling updates and brick the console [Answer: ]
    3. Softmod, can it be removed to update and then redownloaded to get newest version on both Wii and Softmod? [Answer: ]
    4. Softmod, can it be removed to have a warrently repair at store? [Answer: ]
    5. Softmod, whats the worst negativity? [Answer: ]
    6. What do you prefer (Softmod or WiiKey) and why? [Answer: ]
    7. WiiKey, risky? updates? can it be removed? [Answer: ]
    8. What other good options are there out there? [Answer: ]
    9. Please leave a comment of what you recommend me to do. [Answer: ]

Thanks alot fo reading, I'm so looking forward to buy a Wii and play some games online, we might run into eachother =)

#0 youtube is no good for modding anything. don't support piracy, buy legit games and rip them to your harddrive as you will go for a softmodding route with external usb drive
#1 not hard but challanging. take your time to read everything carfully. use the softmod any wii guide (link below) and you will end up fully softmodded.
#2 DO NOT Update through nintendo. also there is no need to update anything to play any specific game or something. (updating through nintendo or handling the right tools the wrong way can brick you yes -> get measures to keep the risk as low as possible (priiloader/bootmii))
#3 yes. also recommended to keep the softmod up to date (but only really neccesary if you run into errors) again: no need to update the wii, do softmod guide and end up with version 4.1 and stay there (nothing special at all on 4.2/4.3 no benefit for the user at all)
#4 yes. (for a chip you have to open the case)
#5 messing around getting all that stuff running. but its worth. you'll be amazed when done (game loading through nice coverflow loaders (check wiiflow on youtube), mediaplayer mp3/avi/dvd)
#6 softmod. its for free. so much more options to tweak with (usb loading is the best, game collection on one drive (i know wode can have that too) oh and it is for free
#7 had to solder the oldschool wiikey1 to the drive board. really tricky. it got better with solderless chips, wode etc. updates around. if you get errors you will do a slight softmod route alongside sooner or later..
#8 use your retail discs (which will get scratches on them) and arrange them nicely in your shelf.
#9 so many questions man just browse the forum, look in the recommended guides section. read the newbie stuff. you ll figure everything out I am sure. reading means the next days not for half an hour

modding also does not interfer with online playing (cheating excepted)

    good luck

edit: new wiis are on 4.2 if you are lucky or on 4.3, meaning you will also need lego indiana jones or smashbrosbrawl (depending on the region of the wii, european or usa, covered all in the guide, you can already start reading)

    1. Softmod, is this hard to do as a average PC user? [Answer: ]
It isn't hard to follow a well written guide (pleanty of them on this site), but understanding what everything does takes a while.
    2. Softmod, is it risky? I was thinking about accedently downling updates and brick the console [Answer: ]
It can be risky, but how risky just depends on what you do. Things like downgrading and installing Darkcorp are very dangerous (especially if you don't understand what you are doing), but a lot of softmods like Bootmii and Priiloader offer brick resistance.
    3. Softmod, can it be removed to update and then redownloaded to get newest version on both Wii and Softmod? [Answer: ]
You don't need to remove most mods to update them, they simply overwrite the old versions. If you do uninstall a mod, it can be installed later as long as Nintendo doesn't block it with a SM update.
    4. Softmod, can it be removed to have a warrently repair at store? [Answer: ]
You can remove softmods, but traces of certain software will always be there, and Nintendo can detect it. Once it is softmodded the warranty is void and Nintendo won't fix it if you break your Wii.
    5. Softmod, whats the worst negativity? [Answer: ]
Since you are just adding features, there isn't a bad side to having your Wii softmodded. Like I said above, if you don't know what you are doing and mess with something dangerous, you can brick your Wii. Most types of bricks can be fixed if you install things like Bootmii and Priiloader, but if you don't think ahead, you can ruin your Wii.
    6. What do you prefer (Softmod or WiiKey) and why? [Answer: ]
Personally, I am happy with a softmodded wii because it is free and doesn't require any physical mods.
    7. WiiKey, risky? updates? can it be removed? [Answer: ]
This I can't answer, since I don't know much about hardmods.
    8. What other good options are there out there? [Answer: ]
    As opposed to what?
    9. Please leave a comment of what you recommend me to do. [Answer: ]
I suggest softmodding because it's free. You may want to do some more research before you decide either way. Remember always read a guide completely BEFORE you start modding.

If you buy a new Wii it will come with 4.3 firmware so you need to follow the 4.3 softmod guide by mauifrog.

Bootmii and Priiloader offer brick resistance.
BootMii (as boot2) and Priiloader are for brick recovery, after the brick occurs. They do not add resistance to bricks. Well, maybe blocking updates with priiloader add some resistance.

Newer Wii's cannot install BootMii as boot2 or play backups from DVD.
