    Question regarding updates...

First off, I just got a Wii. I've had a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for awhile now neither of which I've modded. On PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, when you go to play the game online you're told to update or you can't play online. Does the same apply for games on the Wii? The reason I ask is because If I do softmod my Wii, I'd like to be able to play games online and the stickied thread says to never accept updates from Nintendo. For instance, If I wanted to play Monster Hunter Tri online, if I don't accept the update will I not be allowed to play online? Thanks.

General rule of thumb is don't take an online update. Ever. Take a disc update only if specifically instructed to by a guide or by someone experienced who knows the details of your situation.

Thanks I'll do that, but by not accepting updates am I forfeiting myself from playing games online?

Not at all. Many users still run firmware from 2 years ago without issue. Softmodding should never impede your gameplay in any way.
