Europe Wii on 4.1 - approx 9 months old. Can it play backups & dvds?

    Hi

I have a Wii on 4.1E and its about 9 months old.

I thinking about doing a soft mod on it, but a friend told me that I might not be able to access all the facilities?

For example, it wont play back ups or dvds?

Do you know if this is correct?

Is there anything I can do apart from having it chipped?

Have spend some time scanning through this site reading threads etc, but I am now a little lost.....!!

Some guidance would be 'greatly' appreciated.

    Thank you

    hey
Look for youself, check the serial number of your wii and paste it here: Identify your Wii
If you got a D3-2 or a D4 chip on your dvd drive you won't be able to run any burned dvd, thats correct. chips won't help for that as well.

As burning 100s of dvd is just annoying, time and money consuming, you might consider to buy a usb harddrive (+250Gb or bigger) and you will be able to access your whole game collection with one of those nice coverflow loaders like wiiflow or cfg loader (check them at youtube), when you see that you will dismiss the option of loading games via dvd anyways.

    cheers

    Thanks for your reply vinatec.

    The info was most useful.

I have just clicked on your link and the results were as follows:

    75% chance of GC3-D3-2
    25% chance of Combined GC2-D3

So I presume that means no backups?? What about playing dvd films through a media centre??

I think I will look at the USB route and check out some prices.

Feeling really torn as was told yesterday that chipping was the best way to go??

To me, this all looks good!

    Thanks again

i hate chipping, though i ve done it years ago when softmodding wasn't available.
usb loading is the best by far. so much faster to load games and troubleshoot if something doesn't work.
what kind of media centre? like an standard dvd player? use that one
think you looking for a way to play movies etc: Get WiiMC
plays .avi/.mp3 and more standard stuff, you ll even be able to stream media from a shared network folder (from your pc) to your wii.

there are good softmod guides in the recommended guides section. also a short hello post in the introduction section will give you a nice set of useful links to get along this site.

    good luck

    Hi

Already have WiiMC on my HBC, but it would not play the dvd films.

I am still unsure of this chip thing, so does anyone know if mine will be able to play films. Happy to now go down the USB route so not so concerned about dvd back ups. My wii SN is LEF501 etc etc

I was just wondering of there was something I had done wrong or something was missing?

    Let me know your thoughts...

    Thanks
