Lightbulb On 3.3 Wii, should I upgrade to 4.2?

So I tried following Dogeggs guide to softmodding the Wii for 3.1-4.1, however I ran into a problem with my SD card.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why I think it doesnt work:
Its a Transcend micro SD 2gb and when I loaded all the files onto it for softmodding, reformatted it into FAT32 and plugged it into my Wii I got an error saying I could not use the device connected to the SD card slot.

Buy the Transcend 2GB microSD Card at TigerDirect.ca

I did some research and have come to the conclusion that this must be from not having the 4.0 update which adds compatibility with more SD cards. From what I can tell however the SD card I have is not and SDSH (or whatever its called).
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyways, I am thinking about upgrading my Wii to 4.2 through WiFi since I have no other SD cards and would rather not have to buy one for this one time. But, is there another way to update the system to 4.0/4.1 than the SD card? I know you can use certain games, however I don't have the ones listed. Can I use a USB stick?

I don't think that 4.2 will help you. If your Wii wont read it now then it's an almost guarantee that the Hackmii installer wont read it either even after the update. Besides, you would be better off following the guide you tried to begin with an update to 4.1 and not 4.2 or 4.3. Your better off going out and spending $10 on a 2G Sandisk SD card.

Would be alot better to just go buy a 10 dollar sandisk sd card and do the mod. An official update will take you to 4.3 and trust me you don't want that. You could use a disk update but the compatability you are talking about is sd/hc and so I don't think an update will help you there. Yes you need a regular 2 gig sandisk sd card to do the mod.

    Ca

First of all, thanks for the quick responses!
This seems like a really great forum so far with a lot of great information.

I was wondering if there was a guide somewhere as to which SD cards work well for soft modding, because up here in the snowy lands of Canada a regular 2G Sandisk is $17. I know I'm cheap, but I'm pretty strapped for cash. That's why I'm modding in the first place.

Do you know of any SD cards you could recommend which might be cheaper?
Here's a list from Tiger Direct 2GB SD Card, 2GB SD Memory Card TigerDirect.ca

Once again, thanks for the help!

You could do the tutorial with a 1gb card (I used a PNY). IDK about Canada, but Wal-Mart sells the Wii-branded 2gb cards here for $10USD and they're made by Sandisk.

A 2gig regular sandisk wii work for sure as previously stated. Kinda the reason you can find them in the wii accessories when you go to the store.

How about a Wii brand SD card? It's a Sandisk with a Nintendo stamp on it.

Ultimately, you could rent or borrow a NSMB from your region and get updated to 4.1; that however, doesn't negate the need for an SD card. If you want to skip the NAND backup (not recommended, btw) you could get by with a smaller one.
