Question IOS 249 will not load any USB games for me

Hi guys, I'm a bit new to the Wii mod scene, did my softmod 2 months ago and have been reading through these forums and others quite a bit since then. I haven't ran across any threads where anyone has the same problem as me so I figured I would ask.

Did my softmod, I'm running System Menu 4.1. Homebrew runs great, no problems there. I was at first loading games onto a small USB thumb drive and using cIOS 249 with no problems at all. All backups ran fine.

The problem popped up when I bought a USB hard drive. I have a Western Digital Elements portable 500gb HDD that I verified is compatible here: USB Devices Compatibility List - WikiTemp Someone even confirmed on that list that they are using WiiFlow 249.

I have setup the drive to have a 100gb FAT32 partition and a 400gb WBFS part. This is how my partitions look in Windows7: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15897/WiiHD.png

Homebrew channel worked, I could run the apps from the Fat32 partition just fine. I tried various USB loaders (USB Loader GX, WiiFlow, Config USB) and none of them could see my WBFS partition. I had WiiFlow 249 and 222 installed, so I tried 222 and it could see all the games I put on my WBFS partition. This was fine for me, and at the time I didn't really know the difference between 249 and 222.

This has created problems for me over time though. Certain games I backup to the drive just will not play, ones that are confirmed to be working on USB loaders on the compatibility list here: USB Game Compatibility Table - WikiTemp So I am basically suspecting my non-working 249 to be the culprit (even though I load all these games with 222).

Some examples are Dragon Quests Swords, Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix, Final Fantasy CC Echoes of Time, 007: Quantum of Solace, and many others. I would say about 80% of the games will load, but the others either just sit at a black screen, or go to a Now Loading... in-game screen and get stuck. Whenever a game doesn't load I try every IOS on my list, with no luck.

I have used Pimp My Wii to ensure that all IOSes and cIOSes are up to date. IOS249 is on rev20. This actually fixed the problem with the 249-based loaders not seeing my WBFS. I can now see all the games on the partition, but NONE of them will load if I try to use WiiFlow 249 or USB Loader GX with 249.

I have my USB HDD plugged into the lower USB port (my Wii sits down, doesn't stand up), so I know that is correct.

What am I missing/doing wrong? Let me know if more information is needed. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be as comprehensive as possible.

Thanks in advanced for the help, this forum rocks!

"Brick My Wii" is not the tool to use; there's a reason why we refer to it thusly on the site. Did you check out Gen3SF's USB HD tutorial here? Be aware, our softmod guides all support IOS 249 Rev 17.

I did not know people had problems with Pimp My Wii bricking their system, thanks for the heads up. I was able to update all my IOSes just fine with it, but I will definitely be weary of it in the future.

That is the tutorial I used to format my HDD, and I tried to follow it to the letter, that's why I'm here asking for help now.

I was originally on rev17 when I first ran into the problem of no USB Loader using 249 recognizing my WBFS partition. This is why I upgraded to rev20. It fixed the problem with 249 loaders seeing the part and the games, it just does not load ANY games.

At this point, I am not sure if this would even help you, but after I used this guide, I NEVER looked back. I am much happier with this configuration. It will allow you to play games on a USB HDD from a fat32 partition.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to mark this one as "last resort."

I've considered going all fat32, but I want to try to fix the current problem I'm having if possible instead of going an entirely different route that may create new problems for me.
