Buying new Wii what will be the firmware??

Ok long time lurker first time poster. I haven't really jumped into getting a Wii for a while but I'm thinking about finally getting one. Now here is my question. Right now there are three versions of Wiis out there if I'm correct. You have the new black wii, the new white wii with sports resorts, and the old white wii with sports. I guess my question is for soft modding which system would be the best to get, the old white one??? Also the new Wiis what would be the firmware on them? Also is 4.3 the newest firmware out there now??? Thanks so much guys.

Obviously, anyone who did any degree of reading on this site would know, the older the better.
There is no way to know what system menu it will have until you hook it up and check.
4.3 is the latest system menu.

Any way you cut it, if it's a Wii produced in the last year it'll have D3-2 or D4 drive (which means in terms of loading from disc, ain't gonna happen). All Wiis can be softmodded, but USB HD becomes more than norm --- any of those in the last year, most def.

ok thanks well I think I'll just go for the black wii. I don't understand why you would want to load from disc as usb hd would be faster and not so hard on the wii hard drive right?

A few games (not many) will not work from usb and currently neither will gamecube backups. Always good to have more options, like those on the older consoles.

I think CSI and maybe a couple others need IOSPatcher applied to force the use of IOS249 but even then, yup a restriction that you must use disc media in such cases. Fortunately as Odd states, not that many. GC I suspect will eventually get there, but as of right now only unusual mods can do them (Fusion, WODE --- I think, and maybe Sundriver --- not sure).

oh wow thats all good to know. hmmm well I guess even if I buy the older white wii from either amazon or dell they will still probably be produced within the last year so might as well as get a black wii but maybe I'll take a chance too with the white, not sure yet.

You never know what you'll get. We still have users report being able to use disk backups on brand new white consoles, even though it is rare. I have relatives who bought theirs during launchtime and have become bored with them. They will probably sell them and they will also have boot2 capability to recover from almost any brick situation.

If you feel you "have to have" a drive that'll read backups, you can always shop second hand (say a gamestop or similar) that may allow you to check a given Wii's serial number against the educated-guess Wii Drive Database.
